Quite ridicolous if you ask me, if I told her I´d watch TV every day she would have said, yeah me too.
When I'm asked, "Why don't you just watch TV like most people?", I reply, "When I'm watching TV I can't choose what the characters do."
That's exactly what I do!

I'm not the one to shout it to the world, but I'm usually not too sensitive about who knows my gaming habit... Unless that person molds my future.
I'm in a bit of a bind right now. You can say you play sports, you can say you love movies, but if you say you play video games, it seems that you have no life. Why is this?
It is quite simple, really. When you say that you play sport or love movies it implies that you leave your house from time to time. I appreciate that there are arcades and handheld gaming, but when you say you play video games that is a bit too much like saying "I watch television".

I'm damn proud of being a gamer.
In fact I'm wearing a Mario T-shirt as I type this.
but for most people gaming is playing popcap games on work times or doing a round of sims 2 at home.
I have been gaming since the 1990 or so and I like al the flashy ads and TV show spinoff they made when the NES made it's rise.
For me gaming is far more than just playing games, it's about the people who make it. Their drive and even the silly anekdotes from devellopers. I mean it's ok to be obsessed with soccer/football(yeah I'm european)or cars. But once you say you love games it's mind numbing waste of time. (tell me how can an activity where you use three out of five senses, be more mind numbing than just watching 22 over payed buffoons running around some lawn)You use your sense of depth, your reflexes and even your problem solving skills to complete a game.
So gaming is under-rated. It's by far a better activity than watching TV (save for some really good comedy shows and documentaries(yea I like to learn and laugh) Watching a movie lacks the interaction of a game but a game lacks the personal imagination needed in a book so it's a perfect way in between. And why in the world should we be ashamed that we support an industry that has love for it's customers most developers listen to their fans. if they did that in hollywood there wouldn't be so much crappy super heroe movies.
Well to keep it short...
Power to the players!!!

I would only play down the fact that I'm a gamer if I was in the presence of intelligent, yet curvacious women and at job/university interviews.
Genious!

I never flaunt the fact that I'm a gamer, if it's not good conversation material. For the same I didn't go around telling everyone I played football (soccer), back when I did that.

Yeah, playing games isn't all too much different from reading books or watching TV. Except that while books can expand your vocabulary, games, and to a lesser extent TV, can do that too. At least games have the added benefit of helping you improve things like reaction time, hand-eye coordination, puzzle solving, etc.

Gaming is one of my main three hobbies (the other two being running and kickboxing), so I don't bother to hide it. On the other hand, I don't exactly cram it down other people's throats. Also, I'd more willingly tell people that I go running or kickboxing than gaming. Example:

On a day where I go kickboxing/running
Other Person: So what did you do today?
Me: Went to kickboxing/ went running.

On a day where I just sit inside the house all day
Other Person: So what did you do today?
Me: Nothing really (any day where I don't get a decent amount of exercise or social interaction I view as a total waste, regardless of how many S ranks I got in Devil May Cry, or how many Mega Man games I beat.)

The only real impact gaming has had on my life (aside from entertainment and the aforementioned skill improvements) is that it, combined with internet browsing/foruming, has caused me to cut down on other sedentary activities. The only thing I watch on TV nowadays is the Weather Channel, and I haven't seen a movie in theatres since Pirates of the Caribbean...........2.

I'm going to say Yes, but only because Yes can mean sometimes, and no means no

I'm only ever embarrassed when I'm called out over it, and made to feel embarrassed. It's hard not to be when someone's ragging on you about wasting your life.
So true man, my friends tend to make me feel real bad about it. They all play games too, but I study Games Production, so they think I'm like SUPER GEEKY! It actually ended with me not playing games that much any more.

The stigma with liking video games can be heavy, and it's sad really! I guess the reason is gets such "bad press" is because there are gamers who are used to represent the entire community (as with everything!) and they're not exactly the coolest people in the world.

No, its most female scientists. Unfortunately for you, they're either gay or taken. =P
At least in my experience.

There's no reason to be embarassed. I think of it this way: everyone has seen a movie. Everyone has watched some tv. Everyone has played video games at least once in their life.

I'm not ashamed per se, but I don't go out of my way to tell people I'm a gamer. You know, nothing...and I mean nothing* clears a room quicker at a party than a discussion on the pros and cons of being a chaotic neutral bard.

This.

In a typical conversation with people that I just meet I tend not to bring up gaming unless they bring it up first, or there's a good reason to.

Absolutely not.
IF I SIT DOWN FOR AN HOUR TO PLAY PORTAL THAT DOES NOT MEAN I HAVE NO LIFE DAMMIT.
I'm sick of being accused of having no life just because I enjoy playing Grand Theft Auto IV every now and then.
If you play a game for an hour or two thats fine, as long as you still get outside every day, and hang out with buddies, but if you sit down and dont get up from a game for 7 hours then yes, you do have no life.
