Er, yeah I guess this thred is a bit dated.

OK, I come from a time (also known as the 80's) where being a "gamer" was synonimis with being a geek. I haven't actually been to school in years so I don't know what the climate is like nowadays. But "back in my day" if you played video games you were automaticly labled a nerd. I feel old now.

It is contextual, are they trying to insult you? If not, take it easy, its just a 'badge' stating you have skills they don't :D

In fact, even if so, that works too. Remember at least you can spell nerd, geek and dork.

And that you've read a book.

With more than 12 cardboard pages.

That wasn't about a dog and a big red ball.

I hate anti intellectualism. 'Hur hur u r smart hur hur'.

Ha! Most of my mates (apart from one or two) don't know how much I actually play games.
I keep myself to myself... Like a fucking ninja.

I stopped caring what people say as an insult to me. Liking video games or being a nerd or a geek isn't bad.

No. Two reasons for this.

1) I came to terms with the fact that I'm a nerd years ago.

2) I'm an engineer. And a nerd. And it's combinations like that that run the world nowadays.
Same, lets go rule the world together!!!

Doesnt usually bother until its my girlfriend teasing me, thats a tad annoying...

No. The way I see it, better a nerd than a fucking jock. All the jocks I knew in High school were pretty nice (no putting kids in lockers) but really stupid, and constantly partaking in pleasures that I wouldn't consider healthy behavior in the long term. Sex, drugs, drinking, that's all they did with their time and money. All the money I constantly blow on games doesn't compare to what they were doing.

I'm GLAD I'm a nerd. I have more fun at a cheaper cost and never manage to get in trouble. Besides, I could call most jocks "Sports nerds" because they obsess about sports the same way nerds do with electronics and games.

To me "you are such a nerd" sounds exactly like "I admit that you are smarter than I am."

Nope. I get annoyed when my brother and dad call me a geek but that's just because it's gone on for so long and they don't realise it isn't funny, just stupid. They actually started calling it me after Eugene from a series of Big Brother (UK series) even though I have absolutely nothing in common with the guy.

However, as for being called a nerd or a geek in general, or because I like video games, even though I suppose I am one to a certain extent (I plan to teach myself some basic programming languages over summer and I want to do game development as a career), I don't give a damn if people call it me or not. I'm independent, always have been, always will be, and if people don't like it that I don't conform then, in the words of two characters (can't remember which) from American Pie: "Fuck 'em".

Yes, if they don't get the correct meaning. A friend called me a nerd because I perform well in my studies: Sir, that's NOT a nerd, that's a GEEEEEEEEEEEK. And I'm not a DOOOOOOORK for enjoying video games and anime, that's nerdy.

Sometimes, yes. Mostly because nerds don't play video games all that often. Most people who play games nowadays are just Game Jocks.

Plus as Cain said, I dislike people who use the terms improperly.

Really? I though those were synonomis terms.

In my school, I go by two things. I go to a geek school, and I am either 'popular' or 'geeky', or though often called 'sadistic' by some weirdos... but anyways, whenever anyone calls me popular I get far more offended and must correct them. I am a geek. I argue on who is the best videogame character. No way around it. I am a geek, and proud of it!
