Why yes, yes they do. If I can't figure out what the Hell is going on the screen, I won't enjoy the game.
Nicely said, and I agree. I want a game to look nice, or I wont enjoy or feel compelled to play it.

Graphics do matter, but not nearly as much as story or gameplay or enemy AI. Graphics are just the first thing you can judge a game on, but their not the only thing which is why I still play the original halo. sure the graphics are outdated but the story and gameplay aren't. It could easily be argued that Halo 3 may have a graphically advantage but the plot is pretty weak compared to halo CE's.

If I were making a game I'd focus on the story first, the gameplay mechanics second and the graphics last. Its just a shame that these days graphics is being prioritised over these other fundametal factors of games. Im gonna go play the original Tomb Raider now :3

This thread again, cue all the cool kids saying graphics don't matter, or ruin games.

Yes, I care about graphics. I enjoyed crysis far more than any FPS since Half life 2 (which, guess what kids, had stellar graphics for the time as well). I love Gran Tourismo games because of the attention to detail.

Look, I'm not saying games that aren't running top end, spastic powered graphics can't be good, that's not what defines graphics. The art should be clear, it should suit the game play and an appropriate level of detail never goes amiss, physics effects are also nice in some types of games. Cell shaded games often look brilliant, especially on smaller screens (zelda on the DS was amazing). Look, basically graphics do matter, and I've yet to find a good game, that I've genuinely liked, that had poor graphics for the era.

Civ 2 is an example of a game with good graphics, the screen isn't cluttered (it's easy to see what's going on), it's functional, it runs well etc. Good graphics is not synonymous with 10,000,000 pixels

No. There's a very low ceiling for the point at which graphics stop holding the game back. It's a lot more what you do with it.

Case in point- WC3 uses aged graphics and still looks good. WoW was obsolete when it came out in terms of graphics and it still looks good. SC used sprite graphics when games like TA were taking things into 3d and... well look now.

It's a lot more what you do with them, than how good they are.

It does matter up to a point. As long as I can tell what is hostile, what is friendly and what is useful, that's all I need. However, to take an example, when the first Ratchet and clank game was brought out for the PS3, I remember one of the designers saying ratchet could now make a hundred more face. So what? He was plenty expressive enough in the first few games. I spend most of the game looking at the back of his head anyway.

Graphics mean quite a bit to me. I'm a very visual person, as well as not being very competitive. I don't get a lot out of just gameplay alone, though I will rant about a game's flaws endlessly if it has a bad control setup (Star Trek: Online, for example. Absolutely AWFUL control setup!).

I'm a big fan of the original Star Wars trilogy. That series of movies had just about everything that I like in a game. It had an amazingly complex and impelling storyline that was spectacularly deep without being self-righteous and pompously so. You could just watch it as a movie and enjoy it perfectly without feeling like you were missing something or being degraded because you 'didn't understand the deeper meaning.' In addition to storyline, it had wonderful graphics that, even in the age of computer-generated everything, still look pretty dang good. Also, it was on a massive and beautiful scale.

Those are things that I look for in a game: layered, deep - but not snobbish - plot, but just as importantly, it has to LOOK GOOD. I'm not really interested in the super-high end graphics that the current generation consoles are doing, mostly because it looks over-realistic. I just want it to look smooth and pretty. Then, of course, there's the third over-arching aspect of controls. Controls have to be intuitive and somewhat compact, but that isn't what this poll was about. ;)

For the most part, no, but some graphical issues, like texture popping and simply bland and ugly textures, shouldn't be ignored. I don't think all games need to be ultra-realistic, though.

I don't consider good graphics as a selling point to me. But I do think ugly, generic or lazy graphics to be a detractor.

Case in point: Disgaea 3. I know graphics are not important on that series, but when they just copy PS2 assets and can't even bother to REDRAW their characters, that speaked lousily about the developers.

Graphics are important but are not the most important thing in a game. Gameplay, graphics, controls, sound and story must all be of an accepable level for a good quality game.

Good graphics should never be a selling point for a game though, the other factors must come first. But good graphics help the game to be more pleasing to the eye enhancing the gaming experiance.

I do care, yes, the better the graphics the better. That said, I place other things like gameplay and story way above graphics in terms of importance. As long as I don't notice the graphics being particularly bad (which means most games in this console generation), I'm fine with them.
