Does the game graphics matter to you? Simple.
To me, no, the only thing that matters too me is story and gameplay, hell I still play 16-bit
What I mean is the style of graphics, do you care if they are the next best thing to real life.

Why yes, yes they do. If I can't figure out what the Hell is going on the screen, I won't enjoy the game.

Well there are times when they don't matter, but if you play a game that is claiming to be next gen, it's hard to ignore ugly visuals.

Although I voted no, given the times if a game doesn't hold a certain visual standard it starts to get iffy. For the most part, games are, and should be, judged based on their content, not on their visual appeal. If you're going to care about nothing but visuals then you won't have any fun and end up thinking Avatar was the best thing ever.

No they don't. I've always believed if it a game's good enough, it shouldn't need good graphics..

They do help though.

I care, but not to the extent that most do. As long as I can tell what is going on, I'm fine. Graphics are on the low end of my caring scale.

I can't get immersed with the game if the graphics look like something from the SNES era. It doesn't need be to Crysis' brother, but at least somewhat realistic is necessary.

Spoiled? Maybe :)

Slightly yes.

Sometimes I don't care if the gameplay and story are great, if the game looks completely ugly then I'm not playing it.

But I do have some exceptions.

I agree. The grey/brown landscapes sure look real in all those shooters but they all look the damn same to the point where I have found I develop a sort of snow blindness and really can't pick out enemies unless they are shooting at me or with 15 feet.

That being said they aren't THE important thing once I can see what is going on, tell friends from foes, recognise plot significant characters and tell when I have moved to another place I could care less. Crytech are kind of doing a disservice with their insane engines.

We have kinda reached our graphical peak, but they do help the games overall appeal and quality if only a little.

also, what 16-bit games had good/well written stories? (honest question)

Yes and no.
Yes when a game has a good art style and graphics to match.
No when said game is all about the graphics and foregoes gameplay innovation in favor of more bloom effects (Looking at you Halo 3)

To me graphics have been 'good enough' since the N64.

I could see what I was doing, the draw distance was effectively infinite and it had enough sparkly effects to make the world feel awesome.

That doesn't mean I want graphics to stand still or go back, games that look like blockbuster movies are fantastic, what the nine year old me dreamed of when playing Lylat Wars the first time. But there are plenty of times where I think presentation has been over emphasised at the expense of more important things like bug testing or even basic level design. When that happens all the graphics in the world can't impress me.

I would prefer developers make the game look acceptable then put the lions share of effort into the gameplay, final polishing being the thing to do once the base game works and works well. Still not enough of them seem to do that.

Not in the sense that I don't play a game because it looks crap. For me it's like this: from a recent game I expect decent graphics (not insanely beautiful, no need for that, but I don't want to be able to count the pixels) and I'm disappointed when it looks crap, but from old games I expect less and enjoy them for what they are.

They do matter. I'm not saying that they take precedent over story and gameplay, but I can forgive a lot of annoyance if a game is beautifully presented.[footnote]See: 2008's Prince of Persia[/footnote]

I care about graphics to a point. I care more about the gameplay and such, but the graphics need to be decent. I HATE the Borderlands graphics, they're so annoying.

They matter, sure. They're not the most important aspect of every game, but they certainly 'matter'.

If I can't make out what I'm looking at on the screens since the graphics are so bad then that's when they really matter, other times, good graphics can't save crappy games. A lot of the games I play are cell-shaded graphics, cartoony, so graphics can be excused, also since they're lots of fun to play.

I think they are important and can impact the game...but they are defiantly NOT the most important thing in the game.
I can forgive a game with bad graphics.
I wont play a game with bad gameplay.
