Earthbound. I you don't like JRPGs, Earthbound. If you DO like JPRGs, Earthbound.

It's a quirky little game dramatically different from most, poking fun at the same genre while being a game that is both crazy and awesome. I simply cannot recommend it highly enough. If nothing else, it's winnable with a minimum of grinding. Might be tough, but it's doable.

I have found them to be incredibly boring, almost without exceptions. I only enjoy the exceptions because they do some specific thing particularly well. I really loved the setting and characters in Final Fantasy VII, for instance; I still hated the combat, the grind, and having to watch my characters fight for hours instead of actually being able to play. (I think FF7 is the only JRPG I've actually played to completion, actually.)

They are a few that stand out as being passable to pretty good, but most are absolute shite.

I guess original LoZ was a JRPG and obviously FFIV. Zelda was quite open for its day though. Also FFIV ... its a pity that there's not an option now to have it 'open' but I guess with the story guiding it then it's more character driven

it must be said i loved the old pokemon games, especially gold/silver era, but i was 7/8 at the time. they count as JRPG's right?

anyway i find them alright. i don't play them very often. playing final fantasy 10 at the moment, and thats a pretty good game.

although the best JRPG i have played (pokemon encounters of the past not counting) is The World Ends With You. Yes, a DS game is the best JRPG i have played. i just loved the combat and such, and the story wasn't bad.

Hate them for there obsession with making them very "PRETTY" and "Glamorous".That making them ruin it.

I don't hate them just cause. I don't like the turn based combat concept. To be perfectly honest, I have never fully played through one. I have tried one at my friends house but I didn't like the idea of taking turns whilst battling.

Why has nobody here mentioned this before? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLg_QBrpSOs

While it does have random encounters and a turn-based combat system, it's not too linear and features characters that are pretty much like none other on the JRPG market. It's set during World War I, taking place in Europe and Japan. Check it out, though the prequel might be hard to get your hands on. It's darker than regular JRPGs and features more humour.

Edit: This is not the final boss fight and possibly not the prime example to show off the story, but I didn't want to spoil anything. :p It shows off the fighting system pretty well, though. Some mix of turn based and action.

Well, I said ''some are ok'' but honestly I could say that for most game genres.

Very few good games get released compared to the number that are released.

LOL in fact I could say that for most forms of media. But at least with books I can still to my classics.

While the turn based combat concept well...turns me off, I do like JRPGS (the Tales of and Persona franchises spring to mind immediately).

Your link is the broke. Sounds like your talking about Shadow Hearts though. I think that was the name. Was pretty original.
Thanks, I fixed it and yes, I was talking about Shadow Hearts :p

Where is the "I like the genre but some games are terrible" option? I want that one.

No, I love JRPGS so huggy buggy much.

..I see this thread and that thread about video game violence every god damn day by a different poster. Someone make a unique post for once, preferably one about what household utensils you would use to torture a Final Fantasy Character you kept in your basement, and what Final Fantasy character you would torture.

I used to like JRPGs, but I don't have the patience for them anymore. I think the last one I played was Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast. I did enjoy the demo of Eternal Sonata, but I'm not sure I could get through the whole game.

LoZ is an action-adventure not a JRPG.

Why do so many people think that the LoZ games are RPG's? I know role playing is up to the player but this topic in particular annoys me.
