Just a word of advice: if you're about to go on vacation for two weeks, I'd suggest waiting until you get back to ask her. Being relatively unavailable for two weeks doesn't seem like the best way to start a relationship.

OT: I've had a couple, but don't have one currently. They were both good while they lasted, but the breakups were sorta awkward, because I shared (and still share, I guess) a lot of friends with both of them

Not that I'm going to be unavailable for two weeks, I'm actually unoccupied around that time, and probably her. Not sure though.

To OP, why ask her out before leaving? Is she going to be asked out in that time span?

A couple reasons. One, if she's hot, yes, she might.

Two, if its a total rejection, the awkward phase will be nonexistent.

No, but it's because I'm a girl. Not to say I couldn't - I've been asked out by and hit on by droves of the female type. And it's not because I look like a guy even - they think I'm just too cute and adorable apparently.
Sadly, been asked out by more girls than guys.... by a lot.

No. I have started looking for one recently, but do to the fact that I no longer have any sense of flirting and low self esteem, its rather tricky. Whcih sucks, because apparently I am an attractive guy. Most recently, I had to stop seeing a girl (mutual physical relationship) who was legitely crazy. I know I have said this many times, but I nearly got arrested for helping a runaway. She was beyond crazy. I most likely am going to hell.
