Yes I open the doors to everyone but then people won't stop passing and I have to stay there holding the door for 5 minutes and nobody even thanks me or gives me a smile T^T

Of course I do. In fact I do it so much I think its gone from politeness to a compulsion. I'll hold the door open for the people behind me, and the people behind then, ad infinitum and I'll often be stuck holding the door for quite a while. I hold it open it for people going in or coming out, close by, far away, Men, women it doesn't matter, I'll hold the door open for them.

I think it's because I'm addicted to praise. I grow happy when people say thank you, and sad when they do not.

Maybe I need professional help...

I once got a guy that I'm pretty sure was a borderline sociopath to hold doors open for women. He asked me once why I was doing it. I said "Wait a minute, and you'll see." I held the door open for a group of women, then turned to watch as they walked in the building. He said "Okay, what am I supposed to be seeing?" I responded "I get to check out their butts [well, some other word I'm not sure I can use here] and they still consider me a gentleman."

Next day his girlfriend asked why he was suddenly being so chivalrous.

I think it should be expected of everyone. I would certainly frown upon a young woman who let a door slam in my face.
This.

I don't hold open doors specifically for women, I hold open doors (or cede a passageway) to everyone.

Forgot to mention--I had to explain to my friend that that was the trick. If you only open the door for attractive women, they catch on and you look like a jackass. If you hold open the door for unattractive women, or for men, or anyone within X feet, no one ever realizes what you're doing. Or, if they do, they don't mind as much.

For my friends and GF. Sometimes, if I'm in a really good mood, I'll hold it open for strangers. If someone I dislike is behind me, I'll slam it in their face.

That's just common courtesy you open a door look behind you if you see someone you hold the door open.

I push it open far enough so the next person or two can come through, the rest is up to them. Unless it's a disabled or elderly person, in that case I'll help them through.

Always do. I live in a small-ish town, so "thank you"s are rarely neglected, and it's nice to hear that. Also, on some primal level perhaps, I like the feeling of making people feel indebted to me. :p

Little shocked to see posts like "they've got working hands, they can open the door themselves"... while certainly true for the most part, essentially ignoring people behind you is frankly kinda douche-y. /:|

My mother raised me to be nice to people, especially women. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't really hold doors open for men. You lucky ladies.

It's common courtesy, so yeah, I do it whenever I can, mostly when it involves older people, teens can take the door in the face :p

Yeah, it really depends on a few variables. Mostly, yes. Distance, my own personal load (do I have the arms available to open the door?), how many people are coming (I ain't gonna hold it open for, say, a whole room full of people). But yes. It's the polite thing to do.

It would be a social faux pas not to, surely.

It depends on how far behind me the person is. I'd say about 6 to 8 seconds is my usual cutoff point and I'll make sure the door is open when they get to it. I only stand aside and hold the door open if their hands are full or something. If their hands are free, I'll hold the door open behind me for them to follow through.
