The unfortunate few to have died from H1N1 in Britain so far all have had underlying medical conditions, so I see no reason to fear it at all, and I don't think it will become the pandemic the government fears any time soon.
Yup, in all likelihood this will join SARS in causing more damage to tourism to certain areas than people.

A classmate in one of my college classes missed a day last week with the swine flu, and several of my wife's coworkers have been out with the disease. Thankfully, neither I nor the wife have yet fallen victim to H1N1 (or any other kind of flu, for that matter.) Hopefully we survive this mild version of a George Romero movie in time to get the vaccine shipped into town (Reno's been a major swine flu hotspot, mostly because when it first broke out in Mexico it filtered in via the large Mexican population here.)

I'm willing to bet that a huge percentage of people here have had H1N1, and everyone knows someone who has had it.

I made this mistake as well. H1N1 is not the same as Swine Flu. H1N1 is the virus that causes almost all seasonal flues, as well as a few other flu-like illnesses. Swine flu is a substrain of H1N1, believed to originate in pigs.

Truth is, Swine Flu is somewhere between the people panicking, and the people laughing. Swine Flue is nasty, as far as Flu goes. It can be deadly in people who are old, very young, have respiratory complications, etc. Yeah, its not exactly Ebola, but its still a particularly dangerous flu, and flu kills a good chunk of people every year as it is. Taking precautions is wise, and we have, because we have science. School closings and such are probably a good idea too. That being said, after taking those precautions, you shouldn't worry. If you are relatively healthy, then you're looking at a risk of having a nasty flu. If your not, then getting Swine Flu is a concern, but it's not a concern that dwarfs your existing concerns. Thanks to smart people, you have more to fear from the seasonal flu.

Yep. It's a regular flu, and most normal people get over it in a week or so.

I know quite a few people from my school who caught it while on a school trip to Mexico. They were part of the original group that brought it into New Zealand.

It is out of proportion mostly. Its more of a big deal for countries with less equipped and less prepared health care services in certain regions, such as Mexico where it caused many deaths. Although it is just a slightly stronger strain of flu than what is normally the case it is manageable with correct treatment given the infected person has a healthy immune system

I'm not sure how to answer this. Today my psychology professor was gone and we had a sub. She had been talking about H1N1 all last week and apparently she has it now. I don't know. I think it's all in her head. Strange for a person with a psychology degree to fall for that though...
I am so far completely immune to it.

20+ students at my school.

And it was spread my the stupidity of some boy named Juan Torres, who was too stupid to realize just how easily this virus could infect someone. The school then began doing some shit infrared thermometers and began picking out kids with abnormal body temperatures.

I think I remember hearing that some 234 students were sent home, and a majority were either just wearing thick clothing or had a regular flu. Those who hung around Juan the most became infected and are not allowed to come within 100m of the school premises.

Considering how tightly packed the classrooms at my school are, I am amazed it wasn't more.

I know one person who had it back in August. I'm not sure if anyone else around these parts has had it though.

I've got flu at the moment. It might be Swine Flu, but I'm a fresher at Uni so it's probably just normal flu. But I can't get to a doctors at the moment, and the NHS phoneline is pointless - I already know I have *some sort* of Flu, but won't get any drugs until I've seen a doctor, which I can't do in case it's swine flu...

So I'm just doing what I always do - eat, sleep and a lorry-load of Lemsip cold & flu drinks/pills. It's actually thus far proved to be *less deadly* that standard flu (I assumed that 80% of the world's population contracted the virus (fears by WHO), and about 2-3,000 people have died, which gives a mortality rate in the region of 0.000005% or something incredibly ridiculous like that.
