Where's the "read him and he's alright, but really doesn't live up to the hype" option?

Okay, yes, Lovecraft is an incredibly important person in the history of horror fiction. Horror today would not be what it is without Lovecraft. That said, since his death, a number of other authors have done Lovecraft, and they've done it a hell of a lot better. Lovecraft's stories have interesting ideas and interesting monsters, but they're so bogged down in description and other crap that it would be charitable to say that they moved at a snail's pace. This is why, even though he's so important to horror fiction, he's not well known outside of the genre, because short of reading him for the historical interest of his stories, there's not really too much reason to read him when you could pick up a much better book by any number of authors.

Never read any of his work, because I can't find any. I've heard of him and wish to read.
The only time I've come across anything he wrote it was £30 so I went to the ATM and it had been sold by the time I go back.

I've read an anthology that I borrowed from a friend, and graphic novel/comic book spinoffs of the Cthulu mythos on /x/ (paranormal forums) on 4chan.

I love his work and the works he inspired. The only thing as awesome as his stories is his name.

Read pretty much every book and story by Lovecraft and loved it, i grew up on his stories, you know back before all the kids do was playing consoles.

The reason why he might not be recognized so widely is because he is science-fiction/fantasy/horror writer and that places him among the writers generally avoided by majority of population. He never got to be as pop culture as Tolkien, but for me he is among the greatest along with Pratchett, Herbert, Gaiman, Philip K. Dick and Heinlein.

That's "fhtagn," I believe. *adjusts Horror Snob Hat*

I like Lovecraft's writing, although he was a horrid human being himself and it sometimes showed in his writing. (He was outrageously, disgustingly racist, even by the standards of the early 20th century.) Still, I like cosmic horror stories, and I like his monsters.

I've heard of him, know that he's the creator of Cthulu, but I have never read any of his works.

I'm the only person I know that's actually heard of Cthulu or HP Lovecraft.

Love every bit of his work.

Never read any of his work? Here's a place on the web where you can read it all for FREE: http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/

Also, I have compiled the all the completed works into a PDF file. Now, I believe that after 75 years, copyrighted material lose their restrictions and can be distributed, if I am wrong, please correct me in this.

If I am right, I would be happy to post a link for download instead of you having to purchase books.

Go to the library? They're sure to have something by him.
