I've read a number of his stories. The Dunwich Horror is easily my favorite, although The Call of Cthulhu is probably the most important one.

I love Lovecraft. Brilliant Author, amazing life story (dude was messed up), and easily one of the writers I'd most love to emulate someday. Right now, I'm 5 chapters into a novel I'm writing (about 40ish pages), but suffering from writer's block/work stress. The cure? Read some Lovecraft, Try writing a Call of Cthulhu campaign, and writing a Lovecraftian short story...

Indeed, I do enjoy me some Lovecraft.

In the Walls of Eryx is an all-time personal favorite. Then again, I love all his work, so it's hard to single out just one.

Yup, I have the massive book full of all his short stories and most of his more well-known longer works. It's black, leather bound and called the Necronomicon.

And it is awesome.

Never read any of his work, because I can't find any. I've heard of him and wish to read.
The only time I've come across anything he wrote it was £30 so I went to the ATM and it had been sold by the time I go back.

The best of Lovecraft, and only £14
It happens to be this very book, now that I read the rest of the thread.
I have the Necronomicon too!

My favorties include call of Cthulu, Shadow over Innsmouth, The Dunwhich Horror, and At the Mountains of Madness.

Great writer and way ahead of his time.

He is one of my favorite authors of all time. I have yet to read one of his stories and not like it.

I preferred colour out of space myself. My favourite one though, I can't remember its name. Its the one with the escape artist underneath the pyramids.
The story is called, ironically, "Under the Pyramids", in case your question has not been answered yet.

There are a lot of stories which allude to Cthulhu, but, to my recollection, "Call of Cthulhu" is the only on which deals explicitly with that particular Elder God.

I think I have read virtually everything by him (and have the Complete & Unabridged Works sitting right behind me for light reading). I think the only exception is the collection of his rather vast letter collection, which I can't find any more.

living on the east coast of the States, it's hard not to have heard of lovecraft, or H.G. wells for that matter, lovecraft's stories take place in Massachusetts, Conneticut, new hampshire, etc. all of "newengland" basically. and h.g. wells put the entire state of new jersey in a panic during a radio broadcast in his day. other authors of note, stephen king, most of his stories take place in maine. edgar allen poe, lived in philadelphia for a bit of time, wrote about various places (and hoaxes under pen names) on the east coast, etc., etc...
live in an area long enough one does tend to at least hear about the authors and the stories they told.
I think the most surprising thing about lovecraft is that the only reinactment/acting group that shows a large current following and whatnot is based in Denver, Colorado.

I love H.P. Lovecraft, he was an amazing writer. The Dunwich Horror is my favorite story of his, and The Call of Cthulhu is a close second.

No, no, no, it's pronounced KHLU-HLOO! Lovecraft left entire pronunciation guides for his constructed R'lyehian language, you'd think people could abide by them.

Lovecraft was a racist and obnoxious asshole, but I love R'lyehian.

My background :p
XD Beat me to it, still awesome. I have it as a Tshirt.

TW-Yes and Yes. The Rats in the Wall and Mountians of Madness are my top two favorites. I am also a proud but quiet member of the Cthulhu Group. :)

Ehh, to be honest a lot of his writings were just covers for his extremely racist views. It's a neat mythos, but it's rather transparent.

I've read the first few chapters of Call of Cthulu and all of Herbert West: Reanimater, I like both. I found him to go very fast with his stories however, but that could have just been that I had finished reading John Steinbeck's six hundred page epic, The Grapes of Wrath.

I know of him, I can often even identify works inpsired by him but I have never actually read any of his works. I probably should I suppose since his impact has been far reaching.

a LOT of modern horror is based on stuff this dude dreamed up. and a lot of the time, he did it better.
