my mother once came out as mentally subnormal in an IQ test - she's defintely not unintelligent, and is currently a deputy headmistress

I came here expecting a dick-waving competition, what with all the crazy big ego's around these parts, and I'm impressed at how its not quite there yet.

The problem is, how many people have taken a real IQ test? I had to take one back in High School for some reason, and it was over the course of three days. Pattern recognition, spacial perception, memory tests like reciting back progressively longer strings of numbers in reverse order... Followed by a fairly difficult multiple choice test on various subjects that took several hours to complete.

It was fun, I'd like to do it again and see how difficult it is these days. I scored above average, but the actual score is fairly irrelevant unless someone else has taken the same test.

And then there's the online 100 question multiple choice "tests".
I tested along with the rest of my country. It was one of those nation-wide IQ tests.

The most intelligent person had over 186 IQ.

I was 14 at that time, I think, and I scored... 148 or so.

I was surprised, too.

Damn, I have to test myself again.

^ What he said. Besides, IQ tests are only a fairly lax estimate of your brain's processing speed. So it doesn't really determine how intelligent you are, just how fast you can process information... Also the standard IQ test has been proven before to be considerably culturally biased.

In other words, it's like you're a whole computer, and an IQ test is a very inaccurate way to tell what processor you're using, disregarding everything else.

And as someone else already said, there are a ton of ways to measure and calculate IQ,all fairly inaccurate, so comparing it is rather pointless.

I seriously doubt anyone on the Escapist is a genius.
Actually, I had my IQ tested when I was eight years old by Mensa, and it came back as 135. This was when I was 8, so it's most likely gone up since then (can't remember exact scores but since then I've taken different tests and they've all been higher than that.). A lot can happen in ten years. As I say though, this was when I was 8.

When I last checked 5 years ago it was 170 something or other.

Could you add an "I haven't checked in a while option?"
If it's 170 you should really be applying for the MacArthur genius grant. I think you might be mistaken. :p

I'm wondering where you all took your tests. Because an IQ over 160 would mean you're in the top 0.001% of the human population, and I seriously doubt you all fall into that category. If I remember correctly, a woman who was in the Guinness book of world records by having the highest IQ registered landed at around 170-180. And as someone else said, the norm's a score of 100. So, yeah, I doubt the people that answer 150-170. I think the commonly held "genius"-score is at 140.

Edit: Also, I've heard something about a person's IQ remaining constant after reaching adulthood. So to those of you who say "but I haven't checked in a couple of years", it shouldn't really matter.

You don't understand IQ. Its not about how much you know, its about how much your capable of learning, or how all intelligent you are all round. Knowledge and Intelligence are very different things.

Mine is lightly a lot lower than when I took the test, I've blown a few brain cells on beer, drugs and sausage rolls since then.

Your IQ doesn't rise. It gets lower each year.

So true. I dare to say an IQ of over 200 is impossible if nobody knows about you. Because you are almost as rare as a person with 4 arms.

Yeah, sausage rolls can have that effect... :D

Seriously though, I do understand what you're saying here. However, I have taken the test several times since I joined Mensa at 8, and over ten years it's gone up overall, although a couple of times it has gone down. I'm not sure what my current IQ is, except it is definitely higher (I took the test last year). With regards to IQ though, when people I know find out I'm in Mensa they often treat me as a brainbox (even at University where most people are relatively equal to me in terms of intelligence), but that just isn't true. I'm no different than anyone else even with a high IQ, and that's the same for everyone. I used to get a lot of stick for it at high school.

.... and I will add in response to the all "we all took a national test", and "everyone in my class did one".... and the resulting multitude of 150, 170, 180 scores.

You weren't taking an IQ test. Aptitude tests are similar, and might be scored on a similar scale, but they are vastly different than the two recognized IQ tests.

Basically, if you didn't see a psychologist / psychiatrist, or attend a monitored session provided by an organization such as Mensa or the Triple 9s, you weren't taking an IQ test.
There isn't a country in the world that administers either the Weschler or the SB to high schools, or even to universities for that matter (though many psych programs to utilize them, obviously), or on a "nation wide" basis.

... and I would add that it's difficult to believe that some of you who normally post with suspect (to say the least) grammar and spelling are also all in the 99th percentile of global intelligence.
Unless of course, The Escapist is home to the world's largest and most diverse collection of idiot-savants.

About average IQ being around 100 (assuming we are talking about the mean value, for those who are familiar with basic Statistics), that is actually true. The IQ test basically gives you a score which is then standardised so that we get a distribution similar to what is known as the Normal Distribution (basically Statistics jargon). This effectively gives a mean value of 100, and most people will fall roughly within 20% (so between 80 and 120 for their IQ level). the very highest values are therefore achieved only by a very small percentage of the population.

120ish, but that was over an year ago, so it's probably 130ish now.
IQ actually drops as you age.
Last check over 10 years and 7 concussions ago it was 172, I imagine due to loss from age and the damage from concussions (remember the memory portion of the test, I can't remember what I had for lunch an hour ago) it's probably down to around 130.
I know it drops as you age, I'm not stupid, but this year I have been spending in school so I doubt it has dropped.
