I don't live in USA, but still I use my social security number (or, rather Norways equivalent) to log into my internet bank, univeristy, and other places where it is crucial that they know that you are actually YOU.

Once you get out of high school this gets burned into your head pretty quick. I'm guessing anyone here over the age of 20 can recall their SSN without any prompting.

why the hell would anyone not know their social security number?
Because the question shows a disparity of age groups. Once your an adult youll have put your SSN down so many times youll have it memorized but until you are a teen, and start doing things like applying for drivers license you actually rarely have any need of knowing it.

EDIT Wait.. first Bill Clinton is a Bronie.. now Ross Perot?!?! What has happened to the 90s?!?1 [humor intended]

I've known my SSN since I was 16, when I had to fill out like a bazillion job applications to find a part-time job. I have a retail job for the summer now, and some lady AT LEAST as old as me (probably older, maybe 22 or 23) didn't know hers. She wanted to sign up for a credit card for our store, so she had to call her brother at home to get him to dig through her wallet until he found her social security card (which is the LAST thing you want in your wallet, in the first place).

It worked out in the end, but it took her like 15 minutes. Really, by the time you're out of high school there is no reason for you to NOT know your SSN. You're an adult, and as an American it's about the most important number you can know.

If this turns out to be a George Orwell joke, I'm going to find an axe and kill people with it.

We don't have social security numbers here in the UK.

Although the closest thing we have, I imagine, is our National Insurance number.

No, I don't know the number. That's why I have a bloody card.
Exactly what I was going to say. It get's used, what? Once, twice a year for casual employment, maybe if you get a job it has to go down on the paperwork? Those cards are really handy, just lives in the back of my wallet.

Yes. I was in the US Army. I had to use it daily throughout training, and more than weekly thereafter. I also have my driver's license number memorized... and my employee number at work.

Fill out enough job applications and you'll memorize it pretty fast. Plus there's also dealing with the bank, and signing up for classes in college... and plenty of other areas that require you know it by heart.

Yes, I know my social security number from memory. I don't use it too often but I wouldn't want anyone else to get their hands on it so I don't carry around a card for that.
