I live in the hood. People are afraid to go out dressed normally and the ones with enough balls to go out and do it will probably get shot. I would also never do it even if it was safe to do it. Its just not my thing.

I understand reinacting past battles for historical interest or purposes, and I figure that taking it to other mediums like gaming inspired settings or fights is only an alteration, but I just couldn't ever going to see one (Nevermind being in one) without feeling... uneasy?

Sorry, I see it's an additional way of acting and performing (And to something you enjoy as well), but I couldn't ever force myself to something like this.

My view is probably tainted, at least you're reinacting SOMETHING, when I went camping around 7 years back I tried walking back to the car in a forest to collect some stuff we'd forgotten. The only thing was though, was a group of 7 guys in front, stood in the centre of a path near a clearing wielding swords. I got closer and notcied they were wearing matching armor and they were REAL swords (Or at least metal in material), so I start thinking I've just passed into the Twlight zone or something. I get to our car anyway, start walking back down the same path (It's the only path I knew, I wasn't about to walk through the woods at night with 'them' out there) and see them again in the clearing, and by the things they were attacking an invisible damage, shouting out the move they intended to use and what damage they caused...

I think I figured out why they do this after nightfall...

Did when I was around 12~14 years old. You know, it was a fun thing back then. An excuse to "play" even though we were too old for that. We were a rather small group (6 or 7 guys) with a couple of older guys (who were big time LARPers) who arranged it for us. Still have my old chainmail hanging somewhere in the closet ^^

It's not something I'm ashamed of, it was the bomb when I was at that age, and that's really where it belongs. It was when I had time and imagination to enjoy it, if I went back to it I would probably just feel awkward :-/

I do occasionally larp, though I don't usually dress up *too damn hot*. I actually made a very nice spear and tend yell like a mad man during the fights (I rp in a very Orky manner)

I personally don't; I've never seen any around where I live here in Oregon.

It looks like it could be a bit fun, albeit very awkward.
Actually, the Society for Creative Anachronism has a fairly active court in Oregon. My friend Cathy is a member, and if I remember correctly, it is a 13th Century German court. In this case, of course, it would be a historical recreation LARP.

And in case you are wondering, an SCA event is a great way to meet girls.

Before anyone asks. Larp stands for Live Action Role Play, and involves dressing strange, and possibly hitting each other with rubber swords.

And before you begin your rant about how nerdy it is, please take your time to watch these two following larp-vids and THEN decide what you think ;)

Warhammer based war-larp.
Had 475 players at the last event, with a record low number of people ending at the emergency room. (Exhaustion, concussions, couple of broken fingers and a severe life-impairing spiral-fracture to the shin :/ )

One time event named System Danmarc. For this the the organizers had a rather big square in the city filled with containers and trash, to mimmick a near-furture slum.

... So... Do you Larp?
Does pretending two sticks from a tree are swords, and having slow motion "Sword" fights count? I'd love to do a Fallout LARP, or something like that, if I could find a local group with a good amount of people who could organize it good. And now, I must message Russ...
Russ?.. Like in... Russian ;) Because they are the only ones, who can get them selves arces together to do one.

We Danes have to settle for Warhammer 40k larps. :<

I never even knew about it before I went to University. I tried it and found it was a lot of fun.

I used to be part of the whole "It's far too geeky for me" club but a couple of my friends are into it and dare I say it, I am actually considering joining them. Since it's a pretty major and well organised event they go to (upwards of a thousand people) rather than just a couple nerds dressing up in a wood everything I've heard about it sound pretty awesome.

I guess it comes down to a) My love of acting, and b) Me not being too stuck up myself wondering about what people will think to not try something new. ;)

Oh, and anyone who says it's too childish needs to grow up. We play pretend blowing up pink aliens on a Television for Christ's sake. :p

Not a fan of Medieval swords 'n shields. So no.

If it were more modern, (However you could figure getting guns into play, maybe airsoft or paintball, or even Nerf guns) then I would.

You gotta narrow it down. There's LARP like the SCA, which is basically real fighting with armor, swords and beating the crap out of people, the stuff is just blunt. The midevil flair is a bit geeky, but I think even the most jock-ish football player would have to look at people in PVC piping armor beating the living crap out of each other in massive 100 man melees, and say, "Dude, that's hardcore".

The LARP that Ive personally done is World of Darkness LARP, primarily Vampire, but other World of Darkness venues as well (Mage, Werewolf, etc). Ive been part of the Camarilla, the big, official club, before, and Ive learned a very important thing about LARP. It's like any other RPG, just with more visual aids and speaking in character, with particular appeal to people who want to game in large groups, and a bonus if you like costuming. The only problem with LARP is LARPers. In the same way Video Gamers are filled with fat, depressed losers, LARP is filled with creepy, emo-goth weirdos. It is all about who you play with, and you have some control over that. If your not with a bunch of weirdos, its actually pretty fun.

Oh, and people say that they like girls? Well, imagine a PnP RPG you like. Now imagine it's almost half girls. Girls who, naturally, are probably dressed in corsets or other revealing attire. And they spend a few hours around you, gaming, and treating you like your a fellow bad ass. You have a completely legitimate excuse to flirt with them, and often times at the end of the night you go and party. I have to admit that ive used LARPing as an excuse to regularly flirt with a smoking hot girl.

Oh, and did I mention that your male competition is other LARPers? Yeah, the only thing standing between you and hot girls in corsets is LARPers.

It's really... really nerdy. But then again, so am I. So I don't LARP, but it honestly looks pretty interesting. I can think of plenty "normal" people who would do this if it weren't for the horrible image that LARPers are given by society. But then again society is full of idiots, so maybe I don't care... Wait, isn't laser tag LARPing in a sense?

Dammit, I don't have an opinion. It looks interesting and all, and I may try it someday (I don't say a movie is bad unless I've seen it (except Disaster Movie)) but I really wouldn't want to call myself a LARPer. I'm also not really into swordplay and such, but if there was a LARPing... group... that was based on Fallout or something like that, I would throw away all my doubt and join it immediately.
