I like more manga then I do anime. But currently I only watch two anime on a regular basis. FMA Brotherhood and One Piece. But for a period of my life anime was defiantly something that I devoured as if it was an energy source.

Can't even remember what life was like before I started watching it.
Pokemon was my first at around 8 years old. Haven't looked back since!

I have an odd relationship with anime. There are a few series and movies that I love to itty bitty bits and want to watch every chance I get, like Serial Experiments Lain (Seriously, go watch it. It's seriously incredible.), Boogiepop Phantom, Ghost in the Shell and anything directed by Hayao Miyazaki. And I love most Yuri and Yaoi. But I despise more popular anime that people associate with the stereotypical cultural perception of anime, like DBZ and Naruto. I mean seriously, all of those people who think anime is nothing but weird hairstyles, giant robots, giggling schoolgirls, stylised character designs and miscellaneous perversion need to go watch Serial Experiments Lain and possibly Boogiepop Phantom.

The worst anime, IMO, are those horrid school fighting ones. Tengo Tenje whatever, Ikku Tousen whatever, Air Gear. Horrible, horrible. There's only one plot device, to get stronger. I must get stronger. Strength is the key to life. The answer lies......in the heart of battle. Fudging shallow macho BS. And they always shoehorn a 1000 year war in there. Ironically the hero is always a skinny little brat yet he's way more meatheaded than any space marine.

I must protect this big boobed girl so I may 'almost' touch her one day. Ugh, I can't stand it.

The thing with anime was that in the 80's and early 90's we american's only had crap like C.O.P.S, Widget the World Watcher, and Garfield you know cereal box crap. Meanwhile Japan has stuff like Robotech, DBZ(remember DBZ's from the mid 90's), fudging Gundams, Ronin Warriors which might not be as great as remember it, Akira, Fist of the North Star, Fist of the Goddamn North Star, did you see that guy walk through that building that was the coolest shit I'd seen in my life.

I remember my brother, who is as far from an otaku as you can get showing me this stuff because he despised the american stuff so much.

Now times have changed and we're kinda use to it. Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece are a poor man's DB, IMO.

'Hah, I just did a move, let me explain it in excruciating detail.'

'Hah hah, I countered your move, let me explain it in excruciating detail.'

'Hah hah hah, I countered you counter, let me explain it in excruciating detail.'

I always thought Goku was sort of overly simple character, but Luffy makes Goku look like Einstein.

It most certainly is. That's because I'm a Gundam freak. For irrational reasons I just can't dislike Gundam. Don't judge me... *goes and cries in a corner*
Oh thats fine, i enjoy gundam too

I like it, well some of it. This question is like asking, "do you like movies" or "do you like music". There are bits that you like and bits you don't like. I recomend everybody to try anime at least, espesialy studio chibli movies.
It's nothing like "movies" or "music". That is a seriously flawed analogy.

A more apt analogy would be "sci-fi movies" or "rap music".

In example, with rap music, there are different songs with different messages, some is well done, other parts of it suck, good lyrics, bad lyrics, but at the end of the day, it's still just rap music, a specific type of music.

If you don't like rap music, then odds are, you won't like the best of it, or the worst of it.

This applies to anime.

Personally, I'd rather wash my eyes out with bleach than watch an anime. This is why I mention your flawed analogy. See, I've been told to watch "good" anime, like Ghost in the Shell, or whatever the hell it was called. And I did watch it, and while it wasn't the seizure-inducing screen-vomit that most anime is, it was still anime . I wasn't impressed.

Some people like it, others don't, it's not generalizing a style, it's simply not liking that particular style .
but it goes way broader than that doesnt it, if you dont like movies or music, you wont like the best or worst of that either would you.

personally i like story, don't care how it is drawn or written, but some people think that stories with people with bigger eyeballs are better ... ok for them i guess
Movies and music are mediums of entertainment, anime is a style of entertainment. It's not a broad medium, it a specific style, sure it can be varied, but it's all done in the same style.

It's like saying that someone who doesn't like paintings wouldn't like Van Gogh. While that's true, most people like at least some paintings, and if the person in question does like Van Gogh, but dislikes cubism, then it's not really fair to say they don't like paintings in general, based on the idea that because they don't like a certain style, they must not like the whole medium. It's a flawed analogy, and it doesn't work.
in general they wouldnt like the medium and most people would atleast like 1 anime movie/series, possibly more than paintings even. and you are starting to cross into some kind of weird grey area (hah grey, like the avatar), where you say the van gogh -> cubism thing yet also said the opposite about rap music

but really, this is so totally beside the point now and i now hate anime cause i can't box it properly, there ! :D
Anime is not a "style" or a "genre". Hating anime means hating all animated works produced in the nation of Japan, and nothing else. It not as broad as saying you hate movies, but also not as narrow as hating science-fiction or romance. It's roughly equivalent to saying you hate live-action French films.
who doesn't ! taxi is overrated
can we drop this now :(

No, I do not like anime.

I don't hold grudges against anyone here if they like anime. I just hate what it did to my friends.

In every fandom, there is always the person who takes it too far. In the case of anime, it is the people who become so obsessed with it that they automatically begin to start declaring anything that isn't anime to be worthless. Then, when they start spouting off increasingly bizarre names, and I ask just what the hell they are talking about, they come off as ignorant, elitist snobs.

That is why I hate anime. The 1 fucking percent who take it way too far.

As Croshaw once said, there's surely something for everyone among the many animes to exist. It goes without saying that most people can't be arsed going as far back as Astro Boy to actually find their vibe. I'm no weaboo, and I have standards for everything I usually watch. For example, mainstream animes of today such as the likes of Shonen have pretty much bit the shit as far as I care; be it that they'd been plagued with filler or were simply never all that good to begin with. The best Shonen anime was also pretty much one of my all-time favorites and one of the older ones, Fist of the North Star. The problem is most people might end up finding these animated series as the killers of American animation. Not true. Most of the icons and fictional characters that Japanese nerds love tend to actually come from American culture--Elvis, Michael Jackson, Star Wars, the Governator (shut up, he counts!), Batman, etc.

Granted, I'll say that I can still cound on only a hand and a half the number of animes that I really dig, and the ones that actually use any of the generalizations typical among the animes are practically made as satire of it. If I had to recommend something really good that isn't particularly old, I'd say to check out something called Karas.

Then there's Akira, which to my knowledge is regarded as one of the best animated films of all time (of ALL TIME!). But again, no matter how many I watch, I too find myself turned off a bit by the stereotypes typical of Japanese preferences. There are only a small handful of iconic characters that come from Japanese media who aren't clearly made to be those suave, slick, smirking prettyboys or timid/emo/reluctant leaders male characters, and even fewer actually don't get a blatant love interest thrown into their face regardless of origin or chemistry (or lack thereof). Off the top of my head, I can only think of VG characters like Ryu, Solid Snake, that guy from Dead Rising (though he was intentinally made to be as ordinary as possible), and I'll try to get back to you if I can think on anyone else. Even then, JP's grasp on masculinity is a loose one compared to American manly characters like Batman, Optimus Prime, Kratos, etc. (althugh a funny coincidence is that these three characters are voiced by the same guy in Japanese, Tessho Genda, and the latter isn't exactly considered by many Japanese people as being particularly endearing) 'Manime' is a very uncommon thing in the long run, and the aforementioned Fist of the North Star is probably one of the few worth noting.

Look at my avatar and take a guess.

To elaborate, I'm fully aware that a large chunk of it is crap, but I'm not gonna let that stop me from enjoying Darker than Black, Baccano, Nanoha A's, anything by Miyazaki, the first season of Haruhi, Gurren Lagann, or the many other great series/movies anime has.

In theory, I don't like anime moreso than any other medium. However, I typically find that anime shows are more interesting than any western medium. So yes, I would say I'm a fan.

By your reasoning ALL american TV shows are complete rubbish with see through plotlines and cheap drama. The only rational reason for hating Anime, is because you hate watching animated shows. The characters, styles and plots vary a lot. Anime is just another form of media.
Ok I get what you're saying but I'd just like to point out that the main reason so many people like Lost (American TV Show) is because of it's extremely complex plotlines and exceptional drama. Anyway, everyone seems to be saying that I've only viewed a certain type. I figured most anime were like this because everyone is always talking about how great Naruto and Inuyasha (no idea how to spell that) and I think they're ridiculous.

I'm not a fan. Every time I've watched it, i always end up weirded out because the characters are often young, emaciated, poorly dressed kids, with absurd powers. Maybe because i always catch them half-way through, so everything goes over my head.

That's understandable, I don't think you'd like most mainstream anime's and maybe the drawings just annoy you, that's fine but just remember that it doesn't mean much as far as plot or characters go. As always I'd recommend Death Note, but only if you can get beyond the ridiculous premise of a note killing people. My brother and I had an issue with it until we've watched it enough and were pretty much hooked, in my opinion it has more depth and intellect sewn into it than most shows, though I won't promise you'll like it as with all things, 'to each their own'.
