Now, I ask this question because I thought most people like to read. You know, except for the adolescents who constantly complain about book assignments. Anyways, I discovered that one of my friends just doesn't like reading. He says he can't imagine just reading for fun.
So that got me wondering if you Escapists enjoy reading. Well...do ya?
I'm pretty sure that those book assignments have ruined reading for me. In elementary/primary school I used to read a LOT. We had book assignments of course, but they could be about any book you wanted. In high school, we had to do reports on books that were considered "literature" (as opposed to the much nicer "lecture"). I hated every single one of the books I had to read, and I think this taught me to thoroughly hate books. The internet, television and the fact that more was going on in my life showed me better alternatives for entertainment.
On occasion, usually when I'm on holiday with little to do and no other entertainment media, I will read a book and be reminded that it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. But then again, those are mostly fantasy novels (LotR, HP and a few others). I wouldn't dream of ever touching "literature" again.
Edit: Oh, and by the way: books don't really contain knowledge by definition. If I browse Wikipedia for an hour I will learn much more than you will if you're reading Harry Potter (or basically any other novel).
