My friend and I have a very different approach to character creation. Hers always look and act pretty much exactly as she does, this was extremely unnerving in her game of the Sims 3 where the entire neighbourhood were clones of her. I, on the other hand, vary mine. Personally I find creating characters with different styles and personalities can add a lot to a game, although I have been known to recreate the same character several through different games if I'm feeling slack.

What are other people's approaches to character creation, do you recreate yourself or a specific character? Or are they all original as you can make them?

Edit:

I mean this generally, about any games including table-top ones.

Depends on the games.
If it is the Sims, then I will only make one of me, obviously, and all the others as random characters.
Games like Oblivion, Fallout 3/NV, Saints Row 2, I make them as much like me as possible.

it's so rare I can make a character look like me, not many game developers let you have two heads ...*sigh*

If I made characters in my image, they would avoid all of the dangers of the world and it would get pretty boring.

Do you play table top type games? If so, would you make a type that is a likeness of yourself?
Nah, I don't play table top games, and it would be a pain to make a figurine in my image...
But I have seen one Batman 40K space marine figurine. It was brilliant.
And apparently the spitting image of an avatar, if the motivational poster part is anything to go by.

All my human customised creations have facial hair. I'm too fair-skinned to grow visible facial hair at my age.

So no.

In my first playthrough with a human character, I'll usually make him (ALWAYS male) blonde and tall like me, and base most decisions off what I think is best. Makes it more immersive for me, and I am too uncreative to make an interesting, unique character.

I always make my first character on a game as similar to myself as possible (to maximise the sense of immersion) but then all following ones are productions of my creativity.

I normaly make my charecters in game an idealized version of myself at least for the first run, that includes morrality.

In tabletops I try to have varayaty in appearance at least but their morality is usually a slight varient of my own, I also don't have it in me to be truly evil, I have to force myself to do evil acts and even then I come across as more of a sadistic Anti-hero more than anything else.

I usually make a cooler looking version of myself. Started playing F:NV on the PS3 (should I say attempting to play?) and just opted for the default character.

Nope, but I do have a tendency to make my characters look the same in every game; a curvy redhaired girl or a guy with long hair. I want my avatar to look attractive since I have to look at them four hours on end, & I don't want to bang myself.

Well, I usually make mine look like an older version of me.

When I can grow stubble, buy nice clothes and get a better haircut, I will look just like my characters.

Kind of, I model most of my characters after myself the first time I play through any RPG.

After that, its mostly roleplaying as other characters.

I make characters that have a smiler approach to problems as me but not exactly me. At least the first time, on second play through I usally try to optimize. Create the "Best" character possible. If I ever play a game through a third time it is usally to see what I can get away with, Usually a absolute evil character. Like in Fallout 3 where I took it upon my self to exterminate humanity... to see if I could. and I did by the way.

When playing Pathfinder/DnD I am Always good and Never lawful. more fun that way.

Sometimes

I always incorporate a small portion of my personality, ego, or physical appearance into my characters, but never a "clone" of me.

The reason I do this is that it makes it a lot easier to relate to my character, yet be different from myself in an RP setting. If I put a small part of myself into it, it keeps it unique, but makes it something I can uniquely personify.

For instance, in a D&D campaign, I created a druid, who inherited my clumsiness, and bullheadedness at times, but lacked my other features. In doing so, I was able to make the druid a realistic person who was different from myself because of their other portions of personality.
