Me? I just pick whatever looks awesome. Min-maxing a game isn't very fun for me, but that's just me.

I usually end up just choosing whatever i feel like at the time. I don't really plan anything.

I don't min-max, because I don't like trivializing the game by playing the meta.

It's just so more satisfying to get though with a suboptimal party than with a bunch of munchkins.

I assume you mean computer RPGs. Ell, generally no. Although I'd stray away from stupid choices (say, levelling up a skill that realistically does nothing) and I'll try to have it balanced somewhat, depending on where I'm heading.

I handicap myself on purpose, RPGs are generally to easy to enjoy otherwise.

I can't help myself when it comes to min-maxing. I just HAVE to have the most optimal character builds in the game!

I want to play for fun and all that, but always falls into the habit of min-maxing and often ends up breaking the game. It's not that I want to do it, but I just always do it cos i can't resist the temptation of breaking something, like making a 1000 damage bow on skyrim, even though doing that completely ruined the game for me since I could then one shot everything in the game.

Games are meant to be fun. Everyone has a different idea of fun. Personally I go with what I think is cool and fun, numbers be damned. Min-maxing stats/skills and theorycrafting is the opposite of fun for me though I do understand the appeal it has for people to be the best possible.

I only min-max on a second playthrough or so.

Min-maxing does seem like fun at times, but if it's the first time I am playing I won't really hold much to it.

Depends. If it's a single player game I'll pick things that sound useful/interesting. I'll only look up a build on subsequent plays or if I'm getting my ass handed to me.

If it's an MMO I'll level using the same process, but once I hit max level I'll respec "properly".

I do enjoy min-maxing a little bit. My Sorceress build in D2 was next to unbeatable from levels 40-50 where I had 10-20 points in Meteor, Frozen Orb, and Ice/Fire Mastery. but it kept me ridiculously weak until than. Other than that the only time I respec is when the number difference is more important than player skill.

I pick what suites my taste the best, and then exploit every mathematical edge I can find without breaking the pacing of the game, or compromising what it was about the character/build I liked in the first place.

So I guess a 50/50? How boring >.<.

I do what is cool/fun. Min/maxing isn't very fun to me.

Like in Pokemon, I just use whatever Pokemon I like. After spending enough time, say, playing Pokemon, or any game, really, I do get curious about maximizing and ultra-strategizing for the sake of it. But it takes a darn long time.

It differs a lot by game. Sometimes I go all out, like in disgaea games I put a lot of effort into that sort of stuff. Usually I don't bother but sometimes I start these stupid adventures, like in Kingdom Hearts 1, leveling up to 100 on destiny island. I HATE Tidus.

MIN MAXING IS HORRIBLE. WHY DO I DOOO ITTTT?????? But it is lame, and makes Pokemon, a game that i enjoy more when I ignore maxing, into a chore. I will use my low tier pokemon, but then i grind so they have good stats. Its not like i even fight my friends more than once anyway. whelp, time to start grinding the Mawile. It took me a few hours to get the darned right nature. ... Help meeeeeeee

Now Disgaea, I'll just keep on reincarnating (start at level 1 so you get higher stats every time you level up) forever. Maxing is part of the fun... but only in that game.

I usually min max the shit out of my guys in RPG's, even more so if i'm playing D&D. Seriously, a level 2 character should not be able to have a 28 AC. Or my genasi swordsage being able to solo a boss 5 levels higher than me. Seriously, my DM fucking hates me.

But yes I choose all the best skills/feats/abilities I can to essentially make myself a God character from the get-go. Albeit sometimes I nerf the shit out of my guys (normally when I actually want to RP instead of dominate the game) since sometimes I feel really bad about min-maxing. But I also see it as somewhat of an art/profession, since it takes some talent/effort to be able to min max very effectivly

I've always been into Min Maxing. Must be my D&D background. For me it's half of the fun trying to squeeze every bit of efficiency out of the gaming system.

I'll typically mess around with what's stylish on the second or third time through a game if it's good enough to warrant another visit.

Videogames, not really. I tend to have specific goals in mind when I play, but I do not min max.

Fallout 3 is an exception. It has so many good bad glitches that it is almost impossible not to. Wearing the Winterized T51-D saved a lot on medical and repair bills. Dogmeat especially after Broken Steel is installed, means I have an essentially immortal distraction. He kept 5 deathclaws busy while I picked off the rest one by one. Add to that Fawkes and I did not have to life a finger for combat.

In Pen and Paper land, I do not min max at all. In AD&D, I tend to pick kits that were role playing challenges and because they had the best hindrance and lamest weakness.

Aesthetics are always top of my list, in Monster Hunter I used one of the more basic blades for as long as I could before it became virtually impossible for gameplay, and in Skyrim once I had the Banded Iron Armour I decided that was what my character would look like, and also never equipped a helmet, BUT occasionally I do have to force myself to equip the item with the better stats, and ended up with a horrendous hybrid of Dwarven Armour and other miscellaneous stat-boosting things until I could make Orcish armour and enchant it myself.
