Okay, sorry, not a N64 game, a low level PS2 game on par with San Andres. Still looks like shit.

And, no I have no source, but I remember hearing them specifically say that the new Wii engine would make the game look on par with Gears of War and Uncharted.

That, sir, is no Gears of War.
You're damn right it's not.

Without a source I'm just going to have to not believe you at all (no offence of course, but evidence doesn't exist). They have said some outlandish things in the past, but that I don't believe.

Visually it's a shame. They did fine on a technical level, but failed in art direction. Which is why my earlier post stands, that art direction is more important than "graphics" on a technical level. This game is case in point.

Anyway, from you using a screenshot that wasn't a final build of the game, to saying that the game looks like a low level PS2 game, I'm going to have to assume you didn't play the game (and again, no offence but telling me otherwise will change little).

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Graphics don't make a bad game good, they make a good game better.

Normally I would say hell yes, but then you would call me a liar when I say Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time.
Didn't think it looked bad...

In fact I thought it looked pretty good.
Play the typical FPS with good graphics and then Fallout 3, you will definetly notice a difference. I dream of the day when Fallout or Elder Scrolls looks as good as Gears of War or Crysis.
Are we talking PC or console version?
Both. Neither live up to the visual standards of other games, due to the fact that there is SO MUCH STUFF.

It's curious how many t-shirts with pixelated graphics of old popup everywhere while you'd be hard-pressed to find the same clothes filled with "classic" polygon graphics from the 16, 32 and 64-bit era onwards.

The sad notion ingrained in most gamers that "good" graphics means "modern" graphics only shows the blindness of such classification.

This has been happening this way in front of my eyes for many years now. A polygon game which is now considered top notch will, in five to ten years time, be considered almost invariably ugly or sub-par.

This is not a characteristic of great visual art, or of any other kind for that matter.

To answer the poll, I believe that the rules should come first. Any good visuals in a game should a be a consequence of the rules imposed by the game and the kind of atmosphere and message they are trying to express.

Mmm... I'm seeing a distinct lack of love for the text adventure here...
Is it because everyone is too young? Or because they've never bothered to play one?
I personally find them amusing as hell.
Hell, you want a difficult and funny game? The text adventure of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy does a pretty fine job, if you ask me.

...That being said, no, I don't need graphics.

Depends on the game, era and console. if its something that has the immense potential to have good graphics (like the supposed new Zelda) and turns out a flunk then I would be quite disappointed.

There are two part's in game that sums up the rest. They are substance and the way of the substance is deliverd to the audience. They cannot exist either way around.

So the substance is basicly the story and lore etc. Without the substance there is nothing to deliver more like a car with a driver but with no car. I must say I played BG2 but I never liked it. I was born into more advanced video game age rather than isometric age and I am not fond of old games maibye exept the M&M VI+ games. Thou I never compleated the BG2 but judgeing the fanboyism(no insult intended) it seems it had a one good story. But the graphics are substandard for me and the controls and just the constand clicking weared me of so fast that I even didn't got out from the first town.

The way how it all is delivered is simply the graphics, gameplay, sound etc etc. Without it there is no way of delivering the substance. Take a example from Dragon Age Origins. The lore and story itself is run-of-the-mill and classic cliche. But the way it's delivered is in Biowareian fashion:elaborate, detailed, full of lore that is built on a tested, classic base.

TLDR: A good game has to have good graphics and good story. If one is lacking then it's not a good game and for me bad graphics is not a good sign of a potentialy enjoyable game. Neither does when it a bad story. A utterly crap enviroment and story hidden behind shiny graphics is non-buyer for me.

I wouldn't buy current gen stuff if it didn't look all right. However, my favorite game of all time is on the SNES, so you tell me.

I recently played Simon the Sorcerer again, that should tell you something.

Just look at it! Style like that is timeless. Same goes for Monkey Island, Warcraft 2, Leviathan or whatever.

For me, I'll settle for slightly less than average, but it will affect my enjoyment of the game greatly.

Whilst you don't need 3 billion pixels per square inch to make the perfect game, I immediately distrust a person that says they don't need graphics (because they're lying).

Eh, I like to compare games to sandwiches.
Nutella or Marmite sandwiches, for instance, are awesome. Possibly a simple glass of milk on the side, and you have yourself a great snack. The gaming equivalent would be classic Mario, or maybe Pokemon. Enough to get by, because they just don't NEED extra.
On the flip side, a plain old cheddar cheese sarnie needs some tarting up. Branston Pickle or a good toasting would make it delicious. Basically, it needs the special something that just isn't in its core makeup.
In other words... depends on the game ;D

You forget childhood and nostalgia. People who actually grew up with older games such as Dangerous Dave or Commander Keen (like myself) don't really care very much about graphics. At least that's my impression. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to Hexplore which doesn't crash on my new old laptop for some arbitrary reason despite using Windows XP.

That'll be why all those older gamers are the ones who spend so much on their 50" TVs and top spec. rigs.

And when people say they "grew up with older games" what they mostly mean is that they played those games when they came out.

Mafia is perhaps my favourite game, but I'd love for it to be exactly the same today only with the graphical detail of today. Luckily, I've got Mafia 2 to serve that purpose soon. It's the same, except I've come along a few years later.

Well, I don't spend a lot on my computer. I upgrade it every now and then but, for example, I still use a CRT display. ^^

I obviously agree with your point about liking better graphics. But what I mean by "don't really care" is:
If the graphics are good, great! If they aren't (but the game is good), I don't care.
I don't prefer games that have bad graphics but I don't really mind if they do.
