I don't need them but I enjoy them. I like pretty things and all but they aren't the ONLY thing. I can forgive poor graphics if there's awesome gameplay and storyline.

I've just come off of a nostalgia-trip of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I enjoyed it, so graphics aren't everything.
Though, to be honest, I would be annoyed if a newly released game had backwards looking graphics. Older games' graphics don't bug me in the slightest, but I kind of expect new ones to have decent graphics.
Either way, I don't care as long as the game is good...

They aren't essential, but they do make a good game better. That being said, they don't have to be perfect, just tolerable.

Good graphics can make a good game better (depending on the type of game) but aren't necessary for games. I mean if your game is too dark and you can't see anything (especially in an FPS) then yes that is a problem. But I also enjoy classic RPG's and 2D platformers on the NES and PS1. I tend to favor a more cartoony or artistic looking game over a realistic looking one anyways.

No amount of bad graphics can make a bad game good, and realism is wholly unnecessary, However style and art design is a different matter that can really help a game, Like patapon which I bought based on the brilliant art style alone.

As long as you can see what's going on graphics aren't that important to making a good game.

I think it depends on the context of the game. I know a lot of people who don't like to play older games because they are "too dull looking" or "have old, sucky graphics". I think having good graphics is definitely a plus, especially with newer FPS's, since better graphics could make the game more immersive, but they certainly aren't a necessity.

I think what a lot of developers don't realize is that gameplay itself should be the absolute top priority. Then story, then graphics, in my opinion.

Graphics are an important part of games, most of the time the graphics can enhance or hurt a games overall quality quite significantly. That being said, they are not as important as good gameplay, and to a lesser extant, story. Bad(as in ugly, not low-tech) graphics can make the game less enjoyable, and great graphics can make it more fun yo play.

yes, I need graphics(unless it's a text adventure). Stylized or photo realistic, pick. Either is fine, just do it well.

Ok, so I was talking to my friends and we soon got into video gaming. I said that graphics are like a good add on to the game, but you don't need them to have a good game.
Try playing games with the monitor/TV turned off and you'll have your answer.

If it beats the gamecube, its amazing to me. Seriously. If its 2-D then if it's as good as the Super Nintendo or better then it amazes me.

Graphics can add new gameplay elements (i.e. if you couldn't see the environments in detail, Assassin's Creed series would suck) but they can't fix a broken game. It goes both way.

In other news, Nintendo needs to step it up and stop being so lazy with their graphics. There's no excuse; the whole "artistic direction" argument doesn't hold up anymore, or else just go back to making pixelated Zelda games. I'm amazed at how the first Zelda is still one of the best games Nintendo has ever made (my opinion, so shh. I'm a sucker for that game--one of the first I ever played as a kid)

Okay, sorry, not a N64 game, a low level PS2 game on par with San Andres. Still looks like shit.

And, no I have no source, but I remember hearing them specifically say that the new Wii engine would make the game look on par with Gears of War and Uncharted.

That, sir, is no Gears of War.

Some games don't need good graphics because they make up for it with awesome gameplay. However, there are some games that need to have great graphics because they have mediocre gameplay. It can go both ways, but I feel that if your game will benefit from having top-of-the-line graphics that you should go for it, unless you are trying to get a certain artistic style.

No graphics do not matter to me that much, I am currently playing Metal Gear Solid, Ocarina of Time and StarCraft every now and then and I think the graphics are fine. I am also playing Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising at the moment and loving it despite the average graphics. A friend of mine looked at it once and said the graphics were crap so he doesn't like it.

But then again I don't think it would much fun to play a game such as Assassins Creed (The original or sequel) without the beautiful graphics. It would kill the immersion in my opinion.

Normally I would say hell yes, but then you would call me a liar when I say Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time.
Didn't think it looked bad...

In fact I thought it looked pretty good.
Play the typical FPS with good graphics and then Fallout 3, you will definetly notice a difference. I dream of the day when Fallout or Elder Scrolls looks as good as Gears of War or Crysis.
Are we talking PC or console version?
