The best white noise I know of for falling asleep is the sound of a girl breathing, but if I can't have that I turn on my radio and set it to the classic rock station.

I've had a fan running in my room that blocks out other noises for so long, I'm now dependent on the noise. I litterally can't sleep without the noise of the fan.
I'm the same except it's winter here now and the fan is cold so I'm having issues sleeping...

I have to have some form of noise, books on tape are preferable. It's something about the comforting voice I think, the familiarity. My favourite night listening is the original HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio broadcasts. Good times.

I keep it dead silent and pitch black in my room to help me sleep at night, but if I'm extremely tired I can fall asleep in the middle of a group of friends hanging out.

I prefer quiet, I like being able to hear anything that might go bump in the night.

When I was younger I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't have a light on and music playing. I got used to having a light on because I would read in bed (Yay for bed lamps) and would usually fall asleep while reading therefore the light would get left on.

Now I can sleep without music or a light if I need to but I still prefer to have music on because I really don't like total silence and my house get's very quiet at night.

I live in the city next to a busy highway. There are traffic sounds and street lamps coming through my window all night, as well as drunk people staggering down the sidewalk at all kinds of hours.

Not to mention, during the school year's latter months, I usually get about 0-3 hours of sleep a day, sometimes in an office chair or sitting on the floor against the wall. Not only that, but it's usually impossible to predict when the opportunity to sleep (and sometimes eat) will occur. Under conditions like that, you learn to take advantage of any chance to sleep you see. I've become pretty good at sleeping anywhere under any conditions.

If we're working at someone's house, and I get to pass out on the couch, that seems pretty luxurious. It's all pretty bitter, considering I own the world's most comfortable bed.

If all else fails, there's always rainymood.com [http://www.rainymood.com/]

I lived in the country for awhile where it was always so quiet and dark.
When I moved to the city, I had a lot of problems sleeping because of all the light and noise at night.
But I got used to it, and visited my dad in the country for a few days, and wouldn't you know it, I couldn't sleep because it was so damn dark and quiet!

I'm fine without it, but I like sleeping with some background noise, generally my TV set to a 60-minute sleep timer. Just feels better for some reason.
