So finally deciding that I need a intermission from CoD:MW2 to play something else, I rented (since I work at a movie rental store and don't usually pay for rentals, except when our store doesn't HAVE the rentals) Killzone 2 and the first Bad Company game, 2 FPS games that I've heard were fun and interesting to play. The first I tried out (since I actually paid full price to rent this game) was KZ2. I spent 5 minutes actually playing it (maybe 7 if you count installation) and tried both story and multiplayer modes to try and enjoy. The story that hit me was bland, the level designs confusing to navigate, and moving around as well as aiming were a piece of shit. So abandoning all hope for the story, I tried to hop in online, hoping that it would give me a fun game. I ended up spilling my life story to the game and had to sign up to join some clan to play a mode I didn't know what I was playing. So disappointed I angrily hit the eject button (but not really hard, because I love my PS3) and put the game away.

Hoping to have replaced the bile that I found the 1st Bioshock to be, I popped in Battlefield: Bad Company, a game whose sequel I've heard is good form the forums and I felt like giving it a shot, only since I like playing what came before before what came after, I played the first Bad Company. The game play and controls felt better and it felt like it could interest me. However, again I became uninterested, unable to grasp the notion of fun that I'm supposed to when PLAYING the game. Again, sad and disappointed, I took it out and thought I'd eventually give it a second shot. Now I put CoD:MW2 back in and played a few matches before I found it to be unfun suddenly and I went to bed.

However, recently I've played 2 3rd person shooty games, Dark Sector and Dark Void. Dark Sector had biological stuff going on, and with the disc it felt a little broken, but combat felt natural and defeating enemies put a smile on my face when I saw their heads explode and heard their screams of pain. Shooting them was also fun and I'm glad I picked up the game. Dark Void I tried at work, and even though I didn't get the jet pack until the end of playing since I had to close our store (I tried playing DV at work), I had more fun with it that I did KZ2 or B:BC.

Today I realized, that between these 2 games, the 3rd person God of war games, along with Resident Evil 4 (my personal favorite game) and other great games like SotC, I seem to be playing and having fun with more 3rd person games. Sure I'm still a Portal/TF2/HL2/CoD(4):MW(2) fan among a few other FPS games, it seems that 3rd person games seem to be more fun to me.

The reason for this entire explanation is to ask this question: Are you a fan of 1st or 3rd person games? Overall that is. Also, is your favorite game 1st or 3rd person, and how does that relate to your personal choice in games? Now, these can be shooters, RPGs, (RTS has to be 1st person if I'm not mistaken) and ect, but overall, this question is leaning towards the shooters, since that's where most games are either 1st or 3rd and there is a lot of overlap

Edit: I meant to add the Both option in before, but hit the wrong button and was too lazy to go back and edit it before...

I like both, so i didn't vote at all, there should be a "Both" category in there but oh well.

Anyways, games like Uncharted or Assassin's Creed can pull off 3rd person REALLY WELL, games like CoD, Halo and others pull off 1st person REALLY WELL also, its just the style of the game.
I tried the first Uncharted and it bored me, and AC2 took me awhile to get into, but I ended up having some fun with it and will go back and beat it...eventually...someday

But it's true, but the thing is, I had been set to be an FPS guy when all of a sudden these 3rd person shooters came up and re-taught me how to have fun again...

Both. Bioshock and God of War are my two most favoritest games ever. Theres enough room in my world for first and third person games.

3rd person tends to get tricky, and if the programmers aren't careful, you'll end up with zoom in bugs where the camera gets clipped and thrown off target by the environment.

I problem I noticed a lot in ME2.

As for KZ2, I actually really like that game, but I'm not going to argue the issues you had...=/

I prefer third-person most of the time.

Although, in games like Fallout 3, where you can choose viewpoints, it seems that first-person is always better.
Well, they also really messed up the gameplay in TPS view, like they didn't even spend any time programming it to make it feasible...=/

First Person FTW

It feels more immerse and I don't end up in crazy situations where I keep on trying to jump up a wall. I do, but I don't look stupid doing it.

I like 3rd person omniscient (RTS fan). I don't really mind the viewpoint. Good games are good game reagardless of the viewpoint.

Trufax right there. I don't really prefer either mode, but I do have issues with bad cameras in 3rd person games, and clunky movement in first person games. Oh, and the ability to see your feet in the latter - not putting them in makes me feel like a head and arms floating above the ground. I'm looking at you, 90% of all FPSes ever.

So far my favorite games have had both as an option, and I'll tell you something:

When I play an archer in Oblivion, I use first person to line up a shot, because I hit more often with the crosshair onscreen. I back away from whatever is trying to kill me, and I flip between first and third person. As I draw my bow, I use third person to make sure I'm not going to get hung up on something and allow the baddie to close the distance, then when I'm ready to aim, I flip to first person, aim and fire, and then switch to third person again.

It depends on the game, if I have to jump from ledge to ledge or be more aware of your surroundings I want third person. (MGS and just cause)

If I just have to shoot people first person all the way, although if you think about it were the gun is on screen is a little weird, it's like it's attached to your jaw but can move up to your nose when you look down the sites. (cod and far cry)

I understand why, it's to make it slightly more realistic and see when what gun you have equipped.

I enjoy 3rd person most, especially in games that let me customize my character. I mean, what good is 1st person if you can't see all your cool new armor or weapons in their full glory?

It's easier for me to estimate distance in 1st person view.
I can't seem to swing my sword in 3rd person view in oblivion

Depends on if the third person animations are good. If they are, I will go for third person.

Depends a lot on the game. Games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion I played almost exclusively third person, and I couldn't imagine Mass Effect in first person either. To me, the character and what he/she looks like is a big part of the experience. Of course, ocassionally in Oblivion I'd put on first person because I couldn't stand the animations. Thank keelah for mods.

Then there are games like Bad Company 2 that'd I think would suck if played in third person. Bunkering down inside a building with your squad while explosions go off left and right wouldn't have the same effect if you'd be "wathing over" it rather than being in the middle of it.

So yeah, if there is a supported (and intended) third person mode, you'll most likely find me using it over first person. If there isn't, I accept that the game isn't meant to be played like that and go about my merry way. To this day I haven't really found a game and went "Hey, this game would be SO much better if played in third person." vice versa.

With the possible exception of Doom 3 where I couldn't bring myself to play it first person because I was so god damned terrified. Had to use console commands and the gameplay sucked due to the distinct lack of crosshairs, but at least I made it through.
