I prefer to play as male when given the option because I just kind of prefer it. It isn't that I dislike playing as a woman, because I'm fine with that, it's just that given the choice I always go with male.

Generally male. Can't think of a game where I went through female first.
Normally it's just an automatic thing, choosing male first and maybe doing female later. Others are more intentional choices. For example, I will never play a female Shepard because I fucking hate Jennifer Hale's voice.

As a female, I'll take any opportunity to play as a female character whenever possible. It makes it really exciting, because I'm so used to playing as generic male white guy that actually getting to roleplay completely is awesome. Which is actually kind of sad.

That, and I've been raised on Tomb Raider. I expect no less.

I almost always go as a man. I suppose because I just feel like I should since I'm a guy but it really doesnt matter to me. I was a male Shepard because I wanted to see all the romance options for the women. But in Skyrim I was a female wood elf because I wanted to role play a bit and make up a backstory. (Also I learned that elder scrolls is pretty terrible for actually trying to role play, you almost have to play a certain way to get the best goodies)

I prefer to play as male, atleast in RPG games where you form the story or something similiar with player choice as i want to be able to...well because i want to "pretend" im the character. And i dont realy se myself as a transvestite.

Perhaps im abit sexist in the fact that i prefer to play male charachters to the point that in some games where you cant choose gender, i play one of the male classes/choices even if the female had something more suiting my playstyle. But its mostly for my top point where i want to live in to the game abit. I find it hard to live into a game with a girl wielding a two-handed weapon 3times her size with hardly any muscels goes into the fray soaking up the damage not realy helping. Tho the barbarian female version in diablo 3 was probably a version i could have played as, but i took male...

But i might be reforming, i have played borderlands 2 alot and im actualy on my way of max lvling the mechromancer now that im done grinding weapons with my gunzerker. So maybe there is hope for me yet.

I usually play as a female, because it what I feel most comfortable with, but sometimes I'll play as a guy, particularly if I plan on doing a negative karma/morale/side run of something. Girls are nicer to look at, but I also feel more involved in a game if I play as one.

Usually when there is an option to choose the gender it is an RPG and since I mostly only play RPG's. Like Skyrim, Dragon Age, Fallout 3. Stuff like that.

In those games I like to "Role-play" a character. So whether or not my character is a male or female is usually about 50/50. Although I generally relate more to femininity then masculinity, in fact I can't relate to masculinity at all. In RPG's you can be anyone you want.

In almost all games I just go for male characters.
For MMOs I for some reason always tend to make all my main characters female but I suppose that's because I'm an awful perfectionist who's very picky with looks if I have to look at a character for such a long time and somehow it feels better with a female. Also, armor tends to look a lot better if you skip the mandatory bikino-options.

And in Guild Wars 2 it's also because the female Sylvari voice has an astonishingly captivating British accent.

if i have a choice, female.

partly cause we have to many male leads and I'm tired of looking at them.
partly cause 'if i'm a spend X amount of times looking at some ones ass it should look nice'

I found that somehow I seem to play better as a woman over a man... I first tried it in Pokemon Crystal for my first playthrough and did so much better than my second as a male... even though I knew pretty much everything I had to do in the game I still played better as a girl..

Ill admit it is a bit of fanservice but my bigger reason is still I seem to play better as a woman when given the choice

I play as a man, because I am a man. It kinda makes it easier, as RP'ing games usually have relationships, and I can go from there.
Also, I find no reason to falsify myself with such fantasies of womanhood when there are manly things to do.
Like punching deathclaws.

Anything I play has to be male, otherwise I try to do things that I normally wouldn't do if there wasn't any rules.

It depends really.

If I get to make my own character then I tend to pick male, but if I'm choosing from a selection of pre-made characters I'll probably pick a woman.

I couldn't care less. I muck around with the features and observe all the designs till I find one that I like. Sometimes I even pick a certain gender because they look better when holding a certain weapon or wearing a certain armour. If I'm allowed a team of people, I do try to have an equal amount of both.

Reading through the comments thus far I feel like I am an anomaly.
I am male and I usually play as female characters, especially in fighting games and action games, because I feel it adds an extra level of aesthetic pleasure to what's occurring on screen. I'm a big fan of fantasy and style, and I personally believe women are far more interesting to look at when it comes to style due to the curvy shape associated with the average female body. Don't misunderstand my words, I'm not trying to be a snobby pervert who doesn't want to flat out say I enjoy looking at boobs, because that's not what I'm talking about (although I do enjoy looking at boobs and shapely behinds, especially when they are properly proportioned). What I mean with the curvy shape of the female body being more aesthetic pleasing in action scenes and the like is that motion and movement tend to look more fluid and imaginative, whereas male characters in fight scenes usually seem more grounded in their attacks and demeanors which is boring.

That said, I'll usually play as a male character in MMO's and such, probably because it feels natural to play that way. I say I am an anomaly particularly because I choose to play as female characters when they have character and depth to them, or when I feel I can give them more character and depth if I so desire.

TL:DR
I prefer to play female because the games I play are more enjoyable with female characters. I play male the more blank slate the avatar is.

It really all depends on how butt-ugly the males are. I generally try to play as a male that looks as close to myself as possible, but if every guy looks like a wall of steak with roadkill for a face, I'll stick with the ladies. It also depends on my hormones at the time. Generally, though, I at least try to make my initial run as a guy.

I do alternate but one reason why I sometimes choose to play as a female character is because the outfits and armor are designed better, I could mix and match and make a great walking around outfit without looking like a slut or someone with an allergy of wearing too much clothing. Currently in my MMO I am male though as a glitch with headwear on a female avatar really fucked with my design choices.

EDIT: Also with games like Fallout and Skyrim you get the perks to do increased damage to the opposite sex, which benefits female characters greater than male characters.
