I skim through them and read them when I'm bored, but for some reason I can't stand if developers become lazy and barely use a book at all.

I almost raged when I found out why Black Ops was so light, and I didn't even have a logical reason.

Used to back in the PS2 Era. Most were thick and had lots in them. Back when i had my Xn=box i remember getting a manual that was just a pamphlet, 1 peice of paper folded down the middle. forgot which game though.

Also back then the game cases them selves used to be thick and heavy. now to save costs they are paper thin plastic and have holes cut in them to save even more material.

I did back when they were pretty much books. Not anymore, there's nothing to read.
The last manual I read was the MGS4 one.

If I've got a manual with the game, I'll read it. That is, as long as the language of the manual doesn't switch halfway through, like in my Dragon Age 2 manual, of which the first few pages are in German and all the others in Polish or something.

Nowadays most manuals are short enough to be read while the game is installing, anyway. Which is actually sad, as manuals always were a great place to find a little bit more backstory, artwork, world building fluff or even just little jokes.

I started playing video games way back in the days before in-game tutorials, when reading the manual was actually the only way to find out how to operate the controls. And, of course, exactly WHY the little plumber on the screen had to fight his way through legions of tortoises and rugby players.

Today, reading the manual remains an important part of the gaming experience to me, and it's still the first thing I do once I have aquired a new game. As long as they keep making those manuals, I'll keep reading them!

I would, if the developers actually bothered to put something more that the control options in the book. I remember when game manuals used to give you all the background, character details and what weapons, armour and vehicles the game contained.

Only very occasionally, usually when I get an older game or it looks shiny enough.
Otherwise they are usually filled with disappointment. They are much thinner than they used to be and everything they say I either already know or can easily find out while playing the game. It isn?t a bad thing, manuals where always there to compensate for what couldn?t be said or fit into the game because of various limitations.

Fer me, if the game comes with more than a simple slip of paper with the CD Key, it's RTGFDMB (Read The God-Fdsiking-Damned Manual, Bastard!).
One of my favourite manuals to read is the Quake 3 Arena/Team Arena one that comes in the CD jewel case (y'kno that pretty piece of paper in the lid of the case that makes the case feel heavy? yeah, that's the fucking manual, all 32 pages of it!) whilst waiting for the game to install (since the installer is fullscreen, I can't use the rest of my computer during install).

If it's a big manual with useful information in it, than ofcourse. But not when it's fucking 8 pages long and half of it is "COPYRIGHT ACTIVISION OWNS YOUR SOUL" stuff.

I always read the manual out of habbit, going way way back to the days when you never got an in game tutorial and had to find out what the hell you were supposed to do. Manuals are pathetic these days, you are lucky to get more than 3 pages of game info. Which makes me a little sad if I'm honest.

Back when i was like 6, i would read the manuals on the way home cuase i was all excited that i just got that new pokemon game. Now with the exception of minecraft the only times i read the manual is out of sheer boredom, waiting for the game to install, or when i am packaging it for sale. Honestly the in-game explanations can teach evan the greenest noob possible into a killer after a mission.
