No I have never skipped work to play a game, I just stay up ridiculously late playing it (if I really like it) getting about 2 hours sleep then go into work the next day and do bugger all and get praised for my hard work ethic, funny that.

I've skipped school to play games I've just bought, being eager to mess about with the game and bite a good chunk into it. I wouldn't do that now, though. The game can wait.

No because I'm a responsible adult.
EDIT- That's in response to pulling a sickie.

Frankly having vacation days listed in the same way is a tad silly as those are days you can take off for any reason. That should at least be represented in the poll.

I skipped a couple of days at school when TBC came out - looking back it was one of the most stupid things I've ever done.

I barely use my sick days when I'm actually sick (contagious illness notwithstanding). I've gone to work (doing heavy lifting and other manual labor) multiple times while in the middle of a kidney stone attack.

I'm not a selfish dick who'd rather make someone else cover my work just so Ican play a goddamn video game. Considering the average person works about 40 hours a week...that's no that much time out of the approx 168 hours in an entire week. And then there is the weekend, two entire days with no work.

I guess it depends on what's more important to you. Playing a video game the day it comes out (Or whenever you get it), or your job.

I've never thrown a sicky for a game coming out, but I've taken annual leave on multiple occasions for a game I was excited about, I can't afford to go on holiday every time I use up my leave (we get quite a generous allowance) and my collegues often just end up saying they spent their random day off doing "nothing", at least I'm doing something I enjoy. :)

I might consider it, but I wouldn't deceive them about it. I wouldn't ask their permission either, I would simply say "I am not going to be in on Thursday, find some cover if you need it" and be done with it.

Enjoying my time is far more important to me than a job.

When I did work and we needed every pay-check? No. Why? Because a game isn't worth not having enough money to buy the groceries we needed or not being able to pay a bill so we could have running water.

However, I am currently a domestic. So yes sometimes I take a few days off of 'work'. But the house gets dirty, bread goes unmade, vegetables go unharvested, clothes go unwashed, the dogs get wild, and my husband starts clawing at my home office door pining for a home-cooked meal and to ask me where his towel is for the 100th time.

Can remember taking my vacation days when Dragon Quest 8 came out on the Playstation 2. Of course I hid in my room and played the hell out of that game. My friends called me and I ignored them because I knew Doulmagus had to pay. I love old school RPG's and that game just scratched the sweet spot. Combat and cartoon like graphics helped as well. Sucked when I had to come back. Almost everybody was asking what I did with my two weeks. Not about to launch into a story that none of them would understand. So I lied and told them I went fishing.
It's actually illegal to release that series on a weekday in china or japan...can't remember.

OT: Yeah, but only very rarely. Skyrim was one, Pokemon White was another. Only games I will be playing for hours upon hours immediately. I didn't take a day off for Uncharted 3.

Dude, I don't even take sick days from work when I'm actually sick. I was taught as a child to just suck it up and keep trucking. I've called in sick all of two days during the four years I've had my current job (once for food poisoning and once because I'd twisted my ankle). Hell, one day my boss saw me come in and said:"You're obviously unwell. Just go home already" and I refused, because I can work with a fever. So no, I've never taken a sick day for a videogame. The game will still be there when I get home and I have learned patience over the years.

No, because I have never and don't think there ever will be a game that compels me to take that action. I might take a one/two day holiday if I felt I needed a break, but I wouldn't feel right calling in sick when I'm not.

Secondly, I know that if I were to waste sick days, sod's law dictates I will get super sick within the next few months, feel like crap and be forced to go into work instead of staying home and feeling sorry for myself since I already used up everything available. If anything, I am a firm believer in vindictive karma.

Thirdly, I am an awful liar. Even on the phone, you could see right through me. Plus I hardly ever get sick, and when I do, I go big. I've only been off school/work when I am keeled over spewing every 5 minutes or the time I had chicken pox for two weeks when I was 7. Hell, when I broke my leg, I was back at school three days later, hobbling around corridors 10 minutes before classes. I don;t think anyone'd believe I was just off for one or two days.

I have twice, but it's not because I wanted the game day 1, it's because my work schedule would conflict with the store's hours. I wouldn't be able to pick up my pre-order until the weekend, and because of EB Games' policy; after 2 days of not picking up your pre-order, there's a chance they might sell it if they don't have enough copies.

It's never happened to me personally, but I'd rather not take the chance.

nope, never needed to

it's unncanny, games i love tend to come out on days i get off anyway. Skyrim came out on Veteran's day, so i got that off, and now Mass Effect 3 is coming out on an institute day at my school (a meeting for the teachers) occasionally we get them and we get to stay home, so i never ever needed to pretend to be sick

I have a pretty good relationship with my manager. I'll just straight up tell him "Hey, Mass Effect 3 is out this Tuesday, mind if I get the night off"? And I'll get it off.

U Jelly? :p

We work in shifts here so my working days are irregular anyway. I just tell my boss I´d like to have my "weekend" around the time the game comes out.

I've never done it but the day Half-Life 3 will be released, I won't be going anywhere. Work, University, whatever I'll be doing later in life, I won't be doing it that day.
