I wouldn't play it. Nothing against gay people, I just wouldn't be able to feel comfortable playing the part of a gay man. It would ruin the game for me.
Gaming girls manage to play guy characters fine, same thing. :)

Would you play a game where the girl was a lesbian?

yes it could. but concerning games like fable, I didn't really care. As long as his/her preference is not some random concept thrown in, like the homosexuality is part of the character's development, then I strongly believe that it would be a good part.

Yes they are. And I only play the game when I play with friends, and I still think they're gay. A shooter might sit fine with me, an RPG, as I stated before, no way in hell.

But I still must disagree with you. Merely because I find the idea of two men kissing to be gross does not make me homophobic, nor should it make me seem homophobic. Not unless you want to apply the same label to my two friends and call them... heterophobic.

It's perfectly natural that I find it gross, just like it's perfectly natural that they find the idea of a man and a woman kissing to be gross.

If they slapped me in the face with the fact, or involved a kissing/sex scene involving the main protagonist, then, well. It would make me cringe, as stated before, so I wouldn't be enjoying it. And most likely, much of the dialogue would also make me feel a little repulsed. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy it, (although if it was Halo or Gears of War, then I sure as hell wouldn't buy it, considering I don't have a console, :p but this was superfluous to your point), but the odds are that I would not.

If it was... incorporated in such a way that I didn't feel... iffy, then that part would not enter into my calculations of whether or not I'd buy the game.

And of course, as stated before, with the typical hypocrisy of a 21-year old male, I'd have no problem with a lesbian lead.
Haha, well lets hope for your sake that Marcus doesn't come out of the closet in Gears 3 then :)

I think we will just have to agree to differ on this point... but that's ok. Being different is ok...

Visas is a romantic interest even if the lead is a female. So she... goes both ways.

I don't think Mira is supposed to be a lesbian, it is merely that she is much younger than the lead, and thus not interested in him. She could be. (Mira/Mission, anyone?)

I was not meaning to imply that it was a good way for gayness to be in a game, merely that the choice was there.
in the interest of full disclosure ill say that being a guy ive only played KoToR through twice as a woman. ive played it prolly 30 times as a man from start to finish over the years and who knows how many abandond games (as a guy) so im much more informed about the guy aspect of the game. having said that i dont recall off the top of my head if you do get that 'spending our last moments together' sceen between your female lead and visas, ill take your word for it that its there though. miras lines just cracked me up with a male lead, about having to kick the crap out of the other chicks and so on, even though i really dont like HER as a toon either.

i also didnt mean to imply that you were calling for it in games. actualy *I* was using it as an example of how it could be done within the context of a game and be fine by me. truth is i was ....... well not annoyed really, but i noticed that you were hard wired to have a M/F 'relationship' and thats it. i actualy like the deciple as a toon much better than the handmaiden and i dont like being stuck with her if i chose a male lead. im not sure how id feel about having to chose a 'gay' relationship in order to get him, but this is a good example of the problem even so. i think hes a much better party member, but is he THAT much better that id play a 'gay lead' to get him? the good thing about that game is that 'relationships' are meaningless. its just wall paper so that you dont feel like your playing a superpowerd droid, so you could play a lead with gay undertones with no real problem.

as i said though playing a game with gay undertones is one thing. playing a flaming homosexual, in your face, yes you suck dicks lead......... way different. truth is, i guess that i dont think many people like games with 'relationships' in them of any stripe. people are just too different in their romantic goals to be able to put them into a game and have them mean anything, and as more than a few have said, any game that FORCES you to advance a romantic relationship to advance the story line often suck.

it is seldom that a game can make you connect with your lead enough to actualy care about him/her in the context of the story. most times you ignore the 'motivations' as just wall paper and get on with the killing. i didnt care about 'revenge for my family' when i played Fabled 1, i didnt really care all that much about the motivations of the exile in KoToR II (good thing too the way they fucked the ending up). in fact the last game that i played that i cared at all about the 'relationships' as part of the story and not just as a means to improve my lead, was FF7. its also the ONLY time that i cared about relationships for their own sake.

im sure that i dont like 'relationships' in games in almost any form as it stands, playing a game that forces me into a gay relationship WOULD be too much.

Not to offend but no, I don't think it'd work. There are too many people with narrow minds who wouldn't buy it for that very reason, even if it was an astounding game. Its a depressing life we live in...
I agree. But I think it's a matter of time before people like that are in the minority on the homosexual issue. Just like racists are in the minority now, and are frowned upon by most. It just takes time.. about the same amount of time it takes for a generation to die off.
Definitely. In a world where freedom of speech, actions etc. are paramount (if not overdone a little - just my opinion) then when games can have a homosexual protagonist without being ridiculed it will be a step in the right direction.

P.s. Sorry if the sentence is a little hard to read but I'm not always sure where to put commas when using brackets.

Mass Effect, Fable, Jade Empire, Sims, Fallout 2, etc. etc.

A game with a homosexual lead can survive, no problem.

However, a game with a homosexual lead where the homosexuality is shoved in our faces, down out throats and up our rectums might have a bit more trouble staying afloat...

Prove that Duke Nuken, Mario, Link, or even the MC isn't gay.

Most real gay people are just normal people who happen to stare at the other ass when a nice, young couple walks by.

Please someone ban threads about homosexuality

I haven't seen meaningful gaming thread here for two weeks now
This is a very relevant question. If you don't want to participate, then don't post.
It's not relevant, especially since there actually ARE games with lead homosexual roles that appeared in the market and survived (Fable, Clive Barker's Jericho, Mass Effect, etc)

The other reason it's not relevant is because most games are action games. You can't break action with your mustache ridden hero hitting on feminized male fashion designers in the middle of an action game.

The point is, your question is not relevant because sexuality of heroes in games is not relevant.

Also, I sincerely think it would be grotesque to have Gabriel Knight fall in love with a male.
Those games are, (at least Fable and Mass Effect, having not playing Jericho, I am unsure), all optional as to whether or not the lead is homosexual. The discussion is about whether one could do well if one was forced to play a homosexual lead.

Unsure about Fallout 2, but the rest are optional leads.

If it is forced, it is an entirely different story.

Optional is the best way to go, of course.

As I have noticed a clear lack
Im going to assume my role as devils advocate:
(ahm)

I actually think a game that revolved strictly around a gay protagonist would hurt, not only the developer and industry, but the homosexual community as well.

Gaming is already controversial, there are already a host of news groups that run segments on gaming almost every year, if not more. Homosexuals are even more controversial. Having a game devoted solely to a homosexual protagonist, could only hurt the image of gaming as a whole. Homosexuality has a nak for stirring up controversy.
I bet the majority of you are familiar with the "Priest Pedophiles" in the Catholic church.
Unfortunately the most recent controversy came from several seminaries that, because of demand, had outreach programs to the gay communities.
Needless to say, the results were not desirable.
I'm not saying there should never be a homosexual game, just that now really isn't the time.

Also people hate being forced. Adding more controversy to an activity that many enjoy, may upset a large number of people, and hurt the opinions of those on the fence. Shoving your thoughts into another persons face and interfering with their daily activities is actually a small form of punishment, now if you sided with that opinion you may brush it off, but if your undecided or against it, your only turning away others and fueling the fires. And since the homosexual population is a very small minority, doing such acts will not help.

Its like the guy on the street yelling about the end of the world, him getting in your face and annoying you as you walk, isn't making you join his cause any faster.

No, as it stands now, It would not work, nor is it needed.

I distinctly remember my male character taking it up the arse from a Super Mutant at one point, and I'm fairly sure there were other opportunities...

In almost all games there is a Male/Female Love intrest. Sometimes the lead is a girl or sometimes its a guy but never gay. I'm not gay, but I was thinking about it. Homosexuality is very controversial and Do you think the world is ready for a homosexual lead role? And it doesn't mean that there would be a gratuidous sex scene or revolve around their homosexuality just enough to show that they are gay. And not just lesbians...becuase we all know guys would enjoy a game that revolved around lesbians I mean either sex. xD
The world BETTER be ready.

Enough is enough.

You aren't comfortable with a homosexual lead character in a game/movie?

DON'T BUY/RENT/WATCH/PLAY it. Get over yourself, you ignorant hate-filled bastards with bastard icing and bastard cream filling.

Hmmm this is a tough one to call is its all very subjective - as in how you see the world. Who is to say people like Master Chief, Marcus Fenix, Baird, any one of the 1000's of characters are not already gay? The issue is, why should games bring attention to sexuality, the whole idea of playing a main character, is he/she is whoever you want them to be, the npc's around them are often point blank obvious towards their sexuality, but nothing is ever said about main characters and whether or not they are gay, for instance you never see on the back of any game play as a souped up gay soldier with a vengeance, or guide the very straight mans man Master Chief against the final fight with the Covenent. So I stand on my point, its all subjective.

A game with a gay lead probably wouldnt sell very well and will only be supported by a relatively small audience. It's mainly because alot of heterosexuals dont want to be associated with homosexuals of their own gender.
