Think about the Xbox.
Nintendo has been in the game industry for a long time. They had their new console (GC) scheduled for 2001. Sony, the electronics giant, had already had some good success being the only major competitor to Nintendo, when they came out with the Playstation in 1994. Two years later Nintendo had the N64.
Then, out of the blue a year after Sony released the Playstation 2 and in the same year when the Gamecube was released, Microsoft, out of the blue, releases the Xbox. The only game that saved it from failure was Halo, the Xbox exclusive title developed by Bungie, specifically designed to be "the shooter" launch title for the Xbox. Because Halo was such a revolutionary game when it came out, people would buy an Xbox specifically to play Halo. The boost in sales would mean that developers would take the console seriously, so it became one of the most influential game consoles we have.
So yes, if it has a really good, exclusive launch title, much of the caliber of what Halo did for the Xbox, a new company releasing a new system could be interesting.
