It would be VERY difficult for a person to start a completely new company just for gamming. So,it would probably come from a company that manufactures computers.Even if a good one was made no one would abandon their 360's, PS3's or Wii's for it.

It would have to be really, really good and have a unique selling point but I wouldn't say it was impossible.

There are other consoles out there, just more situated to specific markets.

The Zeebo for instance.

It's easy:

1. Get Call of Duty Insert Number Here on your system.
2. Make system cheap, best graphics out of all consoles at launch (i.e. look better than PS360)
3. ???????
4. Profit!

Since today's console gaming is largely based on sequels, I would say no. On the other hand, if they started good now, then maybe somewhere in the future they would be in the ranks of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.. But right away, no.

Depends on whether it has more power for a cheaper price, being from a lesser known brand? If it's worse, the controls are bad, and is hard to design for than ofcourse not! It depends!

they'd need very very good third party support, as well as something fresh and new with the console to be able to sell it. Make sure it's powerful, as low of a price as possible including online services, it must be reliable, and, if possible, make a controller that is superior to the rest somehow.

EDIT: a catchy name would help, too

Think about the Xbox.

Nintendo has been in the game industry for a long time. They had their new console (GC) scheduled for 2001. Sony, the electronics giant, had already had some good success being the only major competitor to Nintendo, when they came out with the Playstation in 1994. Two years later Nintendo had the N64.

Then, out of the blue a year after Sony released the Playstation 2 and in the same year when the Gamecube was released, Microsoft, out of the blue, releases the Xbox. The only game that saved it from failure was Halo, the Xbox exclusive title developed by Bungie, specifically designed to be "the shooter" launch title for the Xbox. Because Halo was such a revolutionary game when it came out, people would buy an Xbox specifically to play Halo. The boost in sales would mean that developers would take the console seriously, so it became one of the most influential game consoles we have.

So yes, if it has a really good, exclusive launch title, much of the caliber of what Halo did for the Xbox, a new company releasing a new system could be interesting.

Before anyone mentions apple

Ahhh, the Pippin. Such an embarrassment. I think MacWorld, or maybe MacAddict named it among the top 10 worst ideas ever to come out of Apple. No surprises there.

OnLive [http://www.onlive.com] recently released their answer for the next generation console! It doesn't have any fancy hardware, since it streams everything directly from some huge servers, directly to your TV.
Don't ask me how it works though...

Oh hello N-Gage, how are you?

That is my answer. Yes Microsoft had the Xbox, but remember it was Microsoft's name attached as well. The already had a gaming threshold, the PC, and had some support already lined up.

Yes it could happen elsewhere, but more than likely these days it would be hard.

It should be possible, the world is crammed full of enough advertising space for any new company to get it's product out there. Would it be out-selling the big 3 at launch? Almost definatly not, excluding the remote possibility of the Halo lightening striking twice. But woud it definatly be a failure? Not at all, a few exclusives and a friendly toolset for developers and a lot of mainstream titles could appear on it.

I agree with most, unless they have a slew of developers making the console festooned with good exclusives, it won't do well since they'd get the same ports all the other consoles would. The only other way is to appeal to the "OOOH SHINEY" crowd and make it have the best graphics out there.

EDIT: Another way they could try to get attention is to do some "sweat-equity" with all the independent developers out there who aren't restricted by a corporate executive and actually be allowed to have full creative freedom with their games and take risks, a lot of which would be bound to strike gold I'm sure. Contract them to make all their games exclusive and if it's successful, the developers grow and we have a bunch of new ones that aren't under the iron fist of a conglomerate making new, awesome IP.

OnLive is the only thing I can see making a breakthrough, shame they want to charge you monthly for it and you need a superfast internet connection. Maybe in 5 years...
If they had the money to launch some satellites it would be perfect.
