Yeah, I've seen a few guys who do nothing but come into topics, don't add shit to the discussion, and act like intellectual elitists.

I think there's a LOT of people who hate on things because they're popular here.

Might just be because haters are more vocal; people who like a particular game (Halo 3, I'm holding you up as an example) are too busy PLAYING their game to voice happiness.

One thing is people get worked up about stuff. Maybe I'm getting old, but on the whole I'm not really bothered if the best selling video game was not to my tastes or if one system outsells another. I never got the drama of high school and much of it seems in that vein with the use of hyperbole.

Yes, including me.

Everyone does it. But interestingly my observation is that we conform to our own brand of edginess. Everyone on the Escapist is edgy in the same way, and this goes through stages, with people acting non-conformist about the Escapist conformity until other people confrom to the new non-conformity.

Internet anonymity, youthful rebellion, this is what people do.

No. It's just that a lot of people here like metal and a lot of main-stream music sucks. Melodrama is usually used to be funny, not serious.

Not I. I embrace our mainstream pals in all forms. I also happen to think Lady Gaga is the best thing to happen to popular music in recent years.

I would disagree that she's the best thing to happen in recent years, but she's hardly been the worst. (That would probably be Pop Idol and the hundreds of spin-offs it spawned)

Anyway, on topic: Personally, I think that the community here is one of the better video game communities out there.

If you ask the people in my life (as in not on the internet), I'm far less controversial here than I am when I can actually talk and not have to think about each word as I type it. As controversial as my reviews can be sometimes, I actually tone them down quite a bit before I post them.

EDIT: OP, you could probably blame the way you feel on everyone trying to be like Yahtzee.

I really don't like how you, and many, many other people, belittle the Internet by saying things like...

The Internet controls nearly every aspect of our society, and yet some people still don't understand why people are serious about it?

Anyway, have you actually considered that this is the way that these people actually feel? Just because they have an opinion that does not match how most people think, does not mean that they're acting 'edgy' or 'anti-conformist'...

You come off as condescending and pompous when you assume things like that... Just mind your own business.
The reason I say that is because people have the benefit of being anonymous on the internet. I would say a good majority of people would not act the way they do on forums as they do in real life.

Ok when I look at movie Bob's comments on hot tube time machine, I see people get mad and denounce it simply because it is too mainstream. They won't bother watching it. Of course how can you say something is good or bad when you haven't seen it? In my opinion people like that are trying too hard to be different from mainstream things.

I don't know how I come off as pompous to you, but if people post attitudes like that open on the internet I damn well have a right to talk about it. Also it seems I hit a nerve with my thread. You a little edgy???

Most of us are social reprobates anyways, or at least I see many of us saying as such.

And I don't think we're deliberately being "cool" non-comformists as such (I despise people like that), we just think things that the majority of people like are shit.

I actually have fairly low standards, so I like a lot of things from a lot of genres.

NON OF Y'ALL ARE LIKE ME! I'M THE BOMB! I'M A NON-CONFORMIST UNLIKE YOU!

Now that I have demonstrated what goes on inside the brain of a normal teenager trying to be kewl, how about we all be civil and talk about our expectations for the years to come?

No? Fine then, more random yelling!

I ALSO GET LAID 24/7 AND ALL THE LADIES LOVE ME!

Nothing speaks better of society, than caps lock

I'm much nicer on the forums than I am in real life...

I have yet to call anyone names in a forum, I have yet to tell anyone that they're stupid for having an opinion in a forum, I've yet to insult people for liking bad things in a forum...

I've done all of those things in real life :(

Like... often... like at least once or twice since yesterday.

Am I a bad person? Maybe...

but not on the internets! :D

Eh, sometimes they can be. I haven't really noticed a significant trend though.

Although the conformist non-conformism you seem to see could just be crazy people with access to the internet. Y'know, like me.

However, I stand out! I am so edgy that it is certain I will be sued by Tim Langdell!

okay I just wanted to make that joke that's all

Hmm, I'm so and so. I have to say I find the Escapist less of a breeding ground for people stuck in thought than other sites, though. 4chan, for example, is full of people who are through and through atheist (excuse the i, I'm on an annoying laptop) and think the thought that anything might even be out there is utterly retarded. Sure, I think the strict 'n rusty catholics are in the wrong, but this is the complete opposite.

It's because a vast population of the users are teenagers.
Duh.
Well, firstly this.

Secondly, i don't get how "non-conformism" can be called that when there are standards declaring what is "non-conformist". I don't claim to be "100% rebel", i'm just using whatever works. But i digress.

And most importantly, third part: a lot of people here are elitists, with all that talk about being "the only intellegent site on the Internet" (FALSE) and similar things. If you ask me, that's the real problem, as opposed to just "being edgy".
As a teenager, I feel slightly offended. The majority of the time, I agree with the majority, but everyone has their own opinions, and will state them if asked, I don't like sheep mentality, but sheep mentality in my book is when you agree without having opinions of your own.

I do notice how people on the site tend to flare up at things they don't agree with quite easily though.
