At times, but you see that everywhere, not just the Escapist. Most users I've come across though, tend to simply like what they like because they like it... if that makes any sense at all.

As for me, I don't often get swayed one way or another by the masses, as I usually let nostalgia take hold of me, in terms of what I like or don't, over all else.

I HATE the people saying "I hate humanity and I think everyone should be exterminated." I think it's the most immature things that people say, and when someone says it they are permanently marked down in my mind as an immature, idiotic dick.
Immature? No.
It's a way of showing how stupid the general population is.
I think it's immature and stupid, and you can't really dissuade me from that. It's generalising, and suggesting a Holocaustx1000 as a legitimate solution. Immaturity.

Y'know, I noticed that while people with lower post counts are taking this thread pretty seriously the more active and vocal members on here tend to just joke about the subject at hand. Dunno what it could mean though.

This is a good place to express who we are, and it just happens that most of us are insane...

I have noticed a lot of people here are pretty open about their personal issues.....like, serious personal issues. Such as having no friends, having psychological problems, not talking to girls....things like that. I wouldn't feel comfortable telling that to anyone, much less random people on the internet.

Whatever, if they feel comfortable, then I like to offer my advice.

Everyone's Opinion will differ. there is no way everyone will agree. I understand this point. However, it is when somebody thinks that their opinion is FACT. This is what pisses me off. If it was a fact, it would be CALLED a freaking fact. If they start preaching how they are insanley correct, i usually either : TROLL, Or, offer said somebody a nice big cup of SHUT THE FUCK UP!
Have to agree with this guy.

OT: I try to form my own opinions, sometimes it involves conforming to majority. I never understood why people hate majority.

As a teenager, I feel slightly offended. The majority of the time, I agree with the majority, but everyone has their own opinions, and will state them if asked, I don't like sheep mentality, but sheep mentality in my book is when you agree without having opinions of your own.

I do notice how people on the site tend to flare up at things they don't agree with quite easily though.
Then you're a lucky exception to the rules. I congratulate you on that.

This I agree wi the, people who proudly bellow that they are misanthropic, anti-social and (and oh, do they like to point it out) "cynics".

As for the somewhat.. deviant... political beliefs you pointed out, I'd disagree, there are people who genuinely believe in these things, and can make a point out of it (even the facists). Of course, there are also those who have no idea of what they're on about, screaming about "capitalists" and "anarchy" wherever they go, trying to appear rebellious (such as me, 3 years ago).

As for China, I woulnd't really call them Communist, they're a failed experiment in a version of Communism, taken from some delusional madmans mind, much like the Soviet Union was.
Oh yeah I mean no offense to those with GENUINE reasons for supporting a belief that isn't exactly normal (Unless it's naziism or something) but I meant what I said in the context of people obviously just saying it because it'll make them seem edgy and using that one hook of supporting an out there belief to flame someone of a different belief, whereas normally those with a genuine reason for supporting a particular political perspective play it live and let live by respecting the opinions of others and not flaming for any good reason.

Mind you recently I went to Hong Kong and while not technically China I did get a sense of the communism that's been imposed there for quite some time (I mean just look at the communist things they sell in any given market place [I actually picked up a nice red star military cap because of the fact that it was something I would only find in China])

I've never really witnessed anyone getting really riled up on this website. At least compared to the other website I go to which can be compared to monkeys throwing faeces at each other in rage, in joy and for fun.

Recently I kinda noticed that a lot of users here like to act mellow-dramatic over the silliest reasons and on the internet at that. Some also seem to denounce things that are more mainstream mainly because it will make them "anti-conformist" or they are above it.

I kinda notice this attitude from time to time, not everyone but some of the more arrogant users. But anyways lets have you at it. What do you think?
I'd say people don't like mainstream bands more often on the escapist because we are proper users of the web.
Using the web generally means someone who has the ability to obtain higher levels of information due to the connectivity the web provides.

This means not being force fed the crap that is the majority of mainstream.

As to whether the Escapist users try to be a bit edgy sometimes?
Yeah and no, I often see people trying to play hardball on here, with poor reasoning they try to support irritatingly dumb stances on political issues, and when pressed for an answer, they give silly reasons that claim to be "tough" or "realist". Which is a codeword for me as "haven't really got a point". (note that not all claims at being tough or realist are this, I was referring to the unsupported claims).

But no, a lot of people mistake the escapist's users as trying to be "edgy" as there are a lot of people who genuinely don't like the mainstream of most forms of media, simply because there are a large proportion of people on here who demand more from media than the majority of society.

And yes, I do believe the majority of society don't demand enough from Media, just looking at 90% of reality TV that is the top spot for ratings is enough to prove that.

Well, I'll still claim that China is to communism what Hot Topic customers are to Punk Rock.

I do wonder sometimes about the mentality of the average Escapist; I see a very anomalous proportion of people here who either come across as or openly admit to being either extremely depressed cynical misanthropes or psychopaths.

It's just an extension of the tendency for people to act different on the Internet, where they're pseudo-anonymous.

And I agree with the dislike for the "popular stuff is bad" attitude. It's obviously not all bad, because if it was universally disliked it wouldn't be popular in the first place! Maybe it's a general fandom attitude, but I have very little patience for the binary "mainstream bad, independent good" thing. It's not split like that. I prefer "good good, bad bad".

EDIT: I also have no patience for the random inflammatory religious comment. Look, people, we all know religion is extremely important to quite a lot of people, and taking cheap shots at that is indeed a good way to get them (justifiably) angry. This doesn't make it right, or appropriate, or for that matter funny and original.

Yup. I also feel a lot of the users, especially the new ones, try to emulate Yahtzee and be asshats to everyone.

Most people on here seem about as edgy as a satsuna.

Intelligent, well mannered, respectful, free-thinking, sure, but edgy? Meh.

Eh? Edgy? Me? Nah. Laid back. My momentum is carried by a bout of wisdom and a couple of jokes. Not much to force. I come here to relax and shoot the bull. As for others, there are some, but I won't say TOO many. People who overreact at the wrong times...I notice the staff brandishing a hammer not far away. This isn't a place to throw your weight around. It gets people irritated.
