This sums it up actually, there isn't a LACK of ideas as much as there are UNTOUCHED ideas.

Oh yeah! They ran out of great original movie ideas since 2000 or something. They need to find some more worth while books to make into movies.

think about it.

Recent movies have been shit and done poorly in the box office

Examples: Saw franchise, G-Force, Aliens in the Attic, The Ugly Truth, Parody movies, ect.
Read this [http://www.ipl.org/div/farq/plotFARQ.html] and have a think about it if you like, I'd say it's not just hollywood, there are only so many ways to go about a story.

Doubtless 'fresh' combinations will appear, with individual touches which will surprise us, and this happens more when you discard the preconceptions of a previous film (that is to say, sequels are sometimes, if not often a bad idea.)

Well, yes and no. With so many movies out already, it does become difficult to make new movies that are similar enough to the popular formula yet different enough not to catch flak. Hollywood is more recently interested in making sequels and books(like the Time Travelers Wife). They are interested in a quick dollar(or million) so are instead of taking time to think of a new and great movie they take the easy way out with cheap jokes and gore to a point that is unreasonable or even going overboard with animated kids movies. I admit that kids movies are not bad, if there is time taken and the movie is not pushed out as soon as possible(AitA(Aliens in the Attic)). My opinion.

You see the trouble here is nostalgia, youll think back to the "good old days" and think of only the good movies, instead of all the garbage and mediocre junk that came out then.

You see there are good movies that come out all the time, with fresh-ish ideas, and then there are wannabe movies... I mean think things like wall-e still come out, which feel fresh and unique and even spark emotions as long as you dont resist like that annoying kid at the theater who says "there is no way that could happen..." "I wouldve just shot him..." "I think im better than everyone..." "Im way above the average movie go-er"

in short there are so many people with ideas who want to make movies, and new things, spins and so on keep getting made

Running out of ideas?
How did you come to that?
There's a difference between marketing meaningless (yet moneymaking) films over deeper or more thought provocing films and being completely out of ideas.

I just saw watchmen (yeah I'm late to the party, deal with it) and, even though it's based on a graphic novel is was unlike any other film I've ever seen. I have lesbian vampire killers sitting on my desk waiting to be watched (Yeah, it will be an "after drinking" movie, and I'm expecting it to be beyond b grade, but it's a pretty provocative, smutty concept for a mainstream feature film and it no doubt ruffled some feathers). The point is, both are hollywood films aimed at niche markets.

They (good films) are always being made, just not publicized. If you want to watch something other than "black guy meets white guy comedy" or "good vs evil action" you're going to have to look beyond marketing, as you would represent a small percentage of the films target audience, a target audience that is so keen on movies that they will consume (spend money on, whatever) films that target them with or without expensive advertisements or mainstream cinema releases.

Yep, for every good movie there is 100 bad ones which follow the same formulas again and again and again, and would be more interesting if performed by bunny rabbits.

But Hollywood does not make movies for originality. They make movies that sell, which means watching what we have already seen before.

When someone tries to do something different, they do not tend to do so well in box office sales. There are exceptions of course.

So I think there are ideas out there, but the tried and tested formulas make more cash

No.

You may think they are because Hollywood is built on blockbusters. Blockbusters obviously need high production values and oftentimes this means being a recognizable brand. However, look a little closer and you'll see that there are a number of more original movies. Avatar and District 9 are good examples of such films (both are to be released in the coming month if I'm not mistaken).
doesn't avatar come out in December?

It does, I guess I was mistaken ;)

Both of you are. The trailer said Summer 2010. Let me look it up.

OT: I kinda think so, though you really can't blame them. Not really...atleast...

EDIT:

According to the lovely Wikipedia, it states The Last Airbender will be released on July 2nd, 2010 in the United States, and in August for the UK.
Avatar and The Last Airbender are two different movies. Avatar is James Cameron's first movie in 12 years due out December 2009 that looks absolutely legendary from what I've heard, while The Last Airbender is M. Night Shyamalan's latest shot at making a quarter-way decent film, due out next summer.

The reason Shyamalan can't use "Avatar" in his title is because Cameron holds the copyright to it. Avatar began conceptually years before that Airbender thing even began being animated, hence Cameron controls who can and who can't use "Avatar" in their movie's title.

As for the topic at hand, it's incredibly asinine and I refuse to respond to it in any capacity. What I will say, though, is that James Cameron is the best filmmaker of all time* and it's been a long 12 years waiting for his next picture (Yes, Avatar is his first film since Titanic, and yes, that was 12 years ago).

totally, i'd like to see their brainstorming sessions:
Man 1: "Ok... um... what should we do now?"
Man 2: "Uh... something about... Gerbils?"
Man 1: "No, too small..."
Man 3: "How about um... Guinea Pigs?"
Man 1: "Yes, I like it! Guinea Pig spies!!!"
Man 2: "What?"

I thought Hollywood was running out of ideas around the time Sherlock Holmes was considered as a movie.
I mean, why is it needed!?

I think so yes. That would explain why about 60% of all movies today are based on a pre-existing intellectual propertys.

Yep, most of them are, though Pixar, and to an extent Dreamworks, both seem to keep pumping out good ones.
