Are we talking about ideas by merit of originality or just how good things are today?
If its the former, then theres only really so original Hollywood can be and still get the masses to watch it. I mean lets face it, Hollywood isnt around to cater to your ideas of movie brilliance, they just want to make money.
If its the latter, then they are still making great movies. Well they havent this year but Shutter Island looks exceptionally good, albeit not original as it was based on a book.

Fuck no, not when you have genius like this.
I actually saw that whole movie.

I laughed so much I got kicked out of the room, so I had to watch it while standing in the doorway.

Running? Hollywood has been in a creative dry spell since the dawn of the 21st century, with only the rare few droplets to fall from the sky. You'd think that they are still making enough 'good' movies to argue against this, but consider that most of the 'good' movies have been either remakes or book adaptations, and honestly they've ruined so many good books in the process of actually doing a good job. So yeah, fuck Hollywood. Video games are the new medium for creative ideas and books will still always be there for us. I would say Television has it's hope, but reality TV has slowly dismantled it from the inside.

This.

Maybe it's me, but it seems like Pixar is the only major moviemaker putting out anything worth watching recently.

if they all made films, for the sake of making a good film itd be ok. now all people want to make are franchise films, because franchises sell

No.

You may think they are because Hollywood is built on blockbusters. Blockbusters obviously need high production values and oftentimes this means being a recognizable brand. However, look a little closer and you'll see that there are a number of more original movies. Avatar and District 9 are good examples of such films (both are to be released in the coming month if I'm not mistaken).
doesn't avatar come out in December?

It does, I guess I was mistaken ;)

Both of you are. The trailer said Summer 2010. Let me look it up.

OT: I kinda think so, though you really can't blame them. Not really...atleast...

EDIT:

According to the lovely Wikipedia, it states The Last Airbender will be released on July 2nd, 2010 in the United States, and in August for the UK.
Avatar and The Last Airbender are two different movies. Avatar is James Cameron's first movie in 12 years due out December 2009 that looks absolutely legendary from what I've heard, while The Last Airbender is M. Night Shyamalan's latest shot at making a quarter-way decent film, due out next summer.

The reason Shyamalan can't use "Avatar" in his title is because Cameron holds the copyright to it. Avatar began conceptually years before that Airbender thing even began being animated, hence Cameron controls who can and who can't use "Avatar" in their movie's title.

As for the topic at hand, it's incredibly asinine and I refuse to respond to it in any capacity. What I will say, though, is that James Cameron is the best filmmaker of all time* and it's been a long 12 years waiting for his next picture (Yes, Avatar is his first film since Titanic, and yes, that was 12 years ago).

* - Or my personal favourite... whatever, let's not dwell on this too much.
Oh. Excuse the confusion. I've never heard of the other Avatar movie, and I assumed they meant the movie based on the animation series.

Heh. Oops.

I don't know really. I'm very picky with movies and rarely watch plain old action. (G.I Joe, never gonna happen).

But I'm very fond of movies like, Reign over me, Seven pounds, REC. Actully, I don't think much have changed, there are still people out there with some good ideas.

Of course not. They have tons and tons of ideas, concepts and so on. They just don't use 99% of them because they think it won't sell well. Having an idea is one thing. Having a good idea is another thing. Having a really good idea that will also sell well? Yeah, good luck.
