The games have been based around him not speaking, so I don't think he should.

EDIT: They are making a Half-Life movie, but it's based on Adrian Shepherd.
Really? I didn't know. Can I find news of this anywhere?
To answer all your questions, there was a low budget live action trailer posted on a one of these forums not too long ago, but I can't remember where, sorry.

All it shows is Adrian running from combine soldiers in a decimated landscape, narrating himself.

They would moan.

Even if they gave him the voice of Morgan Freeman. You know? The voice of God!?

Well, I hate the "Silent Protagonist" bit all together, so I think it would be necessary for Freeman to talk in the movie.

*Edit*

Dont feel theres been enough posts for me to make a new post.

What movies are you taking about? Are the Indie or Foreign films? or are they the mainstream Hollywood drivel we all know and love?

And if you mention the Jay & Silent Bob movies, you lose.

Personally, a part of me would love it if they dubbed the actor playing Freeman with the voice of Fran Drescher.

I think he should be silent, then at the end he turns round faces the camera. and says "hi" or a similar word.

Don't forget that the man's a scientist. If here were to speak, the most likely situation is that we wouldn't be able to understand most of what he says.

This may create a bit of a jarring situation, as you would possibly be left unable to connect with the person you were previously controlling.

Yes, back when films were all silent!
In a story-driven, rather than action-driven film, it would just be plain weird if the main character said nothing. I wouldn't expect him to say much, but the odd "Hi" or "OK" wouldn't be too out of place. Otherwise the film will make him look like he's deliberately being a total dick to the rest of the characters by ignoring them.

Hey, that's an idea! Make the Half Life film a silent film!

That way he can talk without us hearing him!

I wouldn't like him even being in a movie, but if he was and he talked, then it would have to be like in Saints Row 1 where your character is a mute but talked 4 times in the whole game. Half the time they didn't even hear him though, if they're going to make him talk at least make it unexpected like that.

*EDIT* Or a Freeman's mind movie, because Freeman's mind is brilliant.

In the games Freeman "doesn`t speak" because he is you. So if you speak then in a sense that means that Freeman speaks, it`s not like he`s mute.

So if someone made a movie we wouldn`t be interacting with it anymore and we`d be watching at Freeman from a different viewpoint. We wouldn`t be him anymore and in that situation I don`t have any problem with him speaking. Unless they made the movie through his eyes (we see only what he sees). If that happened then he shouldn`t speak.

Half life is was so praised because it used the tools given by the medium better than most people at the time, with the exploration of the surroundings and subtle clues one had to guess what was going on in the complete caos. And it was a blast to shot tons of aliens in their faces, if they had any.

Therefore the one of the less "cinematic" of games ever would make a terrible movie, regardless if Gordon spoke or not.

On something totally unrelated i think it is very lazy and stubborn from valve not to make him talk in any game or explain why he hasn't talked this far. But who knows what the future holds.

Hypothetically speaking, let's say that someone made a Half Life movie. Also, lets say that by some miracle of nature the movie was actually really good. Maybe they got a good director on it, or whatever. Do you think that you could forgive the movie if in that movie Gordon Freeman spoke for whatever reason?
They should just take the Michael Shanks' [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/doomsday-arcade/1364-Episode-23] approach!

Would you still have the placards telling us what people are saying about 15 seconds after their mouths have stopped moving?
Something along the lines of:
"Curses. More of these antlion creatures. Be jolly careful, Gordon old chum. If you step on the sand, they'll attack"
*cuts to helpful resistance member stepping on sand*
"Good lord, it appears to be eating my scrotum."
