"GAME MOVIE FAIL = DO NOT WANT"

Kneejerk response, but the whole attraction and enjoyment i got out of the game was the atmosphere, and they did that really well, so hopefully it'll be similar in the film version. I'm basically trying to say it FELT like I was playing a film
There we are. I fixed that for you.
Thanks, you went to the effort that my laziness wouldn't allow me.

Also, spot on with the picture :D

You can pretty much guarantee a failure in the hands of a retard (ie: the sort of person who thinks a Halo or Gears of War movie is a good idea).

On the other hand, given to the sort of mind that created District 9, it would be a smash hit

The problem is that the aforementioned retarded movie maker will not consider what makes the film popular. Nor will they pick a film that conveys well onto screen. Videogames are an interactive media, and as such you can make a successful game with NO STORY WHATSOEVER! Such a game cannot be converted into film, but by extension a game that is popular DESPITE its story will also fail - I refuse to believe anyone hear played Gears of War for its story...

On the subject of Bioshock's story, how does one convey not only the plot of the game, but also the atmosphere? With the game we had many hours to explore and delve into the weird and twisted world of Rapture, but on screen we have two hours tops. How far into the game is that? Not even half way.

There's also the problem of keeping the audience. It will be a 'gamer' audience, one that probably played Bioshock and as such knows the plot. The revelations that had me on the edge of my seat in the game won't work on screen solely because I know it's coming.

It is possible to achieve a great Bioshock movie, but it'll take more skill than half of Hollywood combined.

I say that Video Game movies can only go two ways, Total Epic Fail, or Total Epic Win. I'm leaning towards failure, but I'll go see it anyway.

The main problem with movies from games is you lose the interactivity then again what good games come from movies?

Firstly, who is doing it? A director with a lot of power like Spielberg or Peter Jackson could get a big budget and be allowed to imprint a vision on it. Plenty of other directors may be talented, but ultimately do not have much power and would have to work the film to a nice, safe, cliched Hollywood formula to appease a studio if it were big budget.

Spielberg would probably like Bioshock as it involves a sort of redemptive family plot - he loves that sort of thing. On the other hand, Spielberg has a way of making movies a bit anodyne - I doubt he could really express the horrific downfall and degradation of Rapture. Peter Jackson could.

Anyway, if it ended up with a director who didn't have the power to impose a vision on it, I fear you'd get a very generic action movie, substantial plot alterations (they'd have to include some sort of strong female or love interest, surely), and the Objectivist angle probably erased or dumbed down to transparency because it's a bit too much to ask film goers to suck up a bit of philosophy with their popcorn muncher.

It has potential in the right hands, but since video game movies usually tend to suck I'm not too optimistic.
