Is any organisation on earth capable of operating a secret coffee machine? never mind a space program?

In the information age there is practically no such thing as a secret.

Maybe, but not in a sci-fi-ish way what with laser guns etc. (though it would be awesome if they could)

Sorry Sleekit, Marines and Navy are different branches. We could have Space Navy Seals though. Hehe Space Seals. It doesn't have the same badass ring to it I must admit. I don't think that there is a space navy. Though presumably one day when we have the technology some force is going to have to marshal in space. They do use the navy so much in fiction for a reason.
I don't know. From what I've seen Navy Seals are pretty bad-ass. So, why wouldn't Space Seals be even more bad-ass?

The UN couldn't operate a petrol pump, and the US can't cover up a burglary or even conceal who a politician is sleeping with without the entire world finding out, so, no, there's no such conspiracy. But I would like to dream.
Oh, God, it is so true. I think this needs to be the quote of the day.

OT: The UN can't agree on anything. Do you think Russia would want the U.S. to be operating something like that? They'd veto that shit so hard it would leave a crater.

I think the USAF colonel trolled you.
Well, he was like 45 so I doubt he knows what "trolling" is. And it's not like I believed him or anything.
You would be surprised....Intentionally lying to someone to piss them off/make them believe something wrong is not a new thing.
Yeah, my JROTC unit just got a new Major and he seems like the kind of person who would love to just mess with kids like that.

I would love this to be true, if it was i would be on the next flight to Brussels to stand outside the 'space navy' recruiting offices screaming 'PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LET ME JOIN...PLEASE!!!' until they couldn't stand it any longer and let me in just to shut me up...Damn it i wanna Battlestar! Is that so wrong?

Seriously though it's just not likely to be true. If it was, an unencrypted USB stick or a laptop full of highly classified files about it would have been left in a cafe or on a train somewhere by now.

Naaaah, the US cant afford a space navy and the UN can barely operate a toaster without weeks of pointless debate and arguments.

I really wish this would be true but it's definitely just another stupid conspiracy theory.

Seriously, there were some initiatives in the late 80s and early 90s, collectively called the "Star Wars" project. No I'm not kidding, it was basically the precedent of using lasers in weapons, that Boeing model mentioned before may have also been apart of it.

Capable...no, but that would be awesome! Where do I sign up?! I want to be a Super-Secret Space Navy First Leftenant! (Captain is overrated, and anything higher is too much paperwork). A dangerous job, fraught with danger, and other dangerous things. But chicks dig a guy in uniform. And you know... I've been to space... and all that other cool stuff.

Probably lasers.

It's fun to pretend. :(

I really wish this could be true, because it would be totally awesome if there was some sort of Earth Space Navy- with massive inter-stellar cruisers, frigates, motherships, orbital bombardment vessels, "pew pew" lasers, shiny combat armour and cheesy cheesy glory and heroism in the name of mother Earth.

The US and other Allies, probably (unmanned small vehicle of course)
NATO, Maby
The UN...nope...When has the UN ever accomplished anything themselves that worked with efficiently and/or with little to no negative consequences.

The U.N.? Naaah. Secret space navies require a singular government with a singular agenda to do that. The United Nations would still be hotly debating NOW if they should HAVE ONE.

Seriously? The UN? The same UN that can't even get a small island nation to ban slavery? The same UN that just harrumphed and wrote strongly worded resolutions when the United States invaded Iraq?

No, the UN cannot possibly hope to run a space navy, let alone secretly.

It shits me to tears that the poll question is so vastly different from the title of the thread.

Sure it's probably physically possible for them to do it, but that's not even similar to "do I think they do it in secret."

Gah!

Yes they have the capability, most countries could do it conceivably, they'd just have to fuck with the budget a dick load.

No I don't think anyone has one.

I know it has been alluded to by a couple of other posters, but not outright stated:

That is only true for the US Marines. The Royal Marines are a part of the British Navy through-and-through (and yes, their full name is the Royal Marine Commandos - doesn't get much more badass than that). Not too sure how it is for other countries, but as a UN project there is the potential for there to be "Space Marines".

As to the topic at hand:

Alas, I doubt this is true. Though it would be awesome. Seems like that Colonel was trolling (because all Air Forces have random drug-testing, including spinal fluid tests to catch any prior use of hallucinogenics, as they really don't want pilots to have flashbacks whilst in the air, so he really cannot have been on anything).
