The reason I ask If you think over all these years you have become better at video games is because I remember back on the early systems like Nintindo - PS1 and even a few PS2 that I struggled with some games. Now that several years have passed I can beat any game thrown at me. But today I decided to go back and use my new found strength to concor my old enemies on my early games. So as I pop in my old games like Spec ops Stealth Patrol and James Bond the World is Not Enough, I find my self still struggling through the same freaken parts as before! Now that either means I suck just as bad as before, games were harder back then, or both.
So tell me. As a fellow person who plays video games, do you feel you are better or games have just gotten easier?

Yes I have improved since I started gaming, having said that games are getting easier so it is hard to tell.

Well I'm getting better at games that aren't RPG or FPS. But for those games that are FPSs and RPGs, I'm the same now at 20 years old than I was 6 years ago at 14 which is probably slightly above average skill

In some cases.

Playing through Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask recently, I can beat the temples easily. I remember them being alot harder when I was younger, maybe my reflexes have gotten better, or I've just played through them so many times, I know where most everything is.

But I still can't beat Super Punch-Out.....

In sonic 2 I used to be able to have all but one of the chaos emeralds by the second zone in about five minutes. I'd then blow through the rest of the game in about 15 minutes. Same for the rest. Also, rocket knight. That game seemed just... automatic to me back then. Now I can barely manage to make it through the first level of the new one.

Games have gotten easier and its made me worse at games.

I bought Jak and Daxter when it came out on platinum, having only just bought my PS2 a year or so before. The last level with the floating platforms in the Citadel was infuriatingly hard until I re-bought it (as I'd part exchanged it soon after back then) and just breezed through it.

It's a mix of skill and that some games are becoming much easier than they used to be, neither one I feel comes really that much higher over the other

IDK why bu before my k/d ratio in MW2 was .96 and now after starting to play it for a few days I managed to raise it to 1.70. o_O Either everyone turned shit or I was given amazing snioing abilities all of a sudden.

Btw. Spec ops has got to be the most complicated control set up ive ever seen in a game. So an other factor is the controls have gotten simpler making it easier and not so frustrating.

Oh my lord, there are so many variables in this case:

- The game(s) could have been harder, due to lack of intricacy in older games. The technology wasn't as developed, so there was less to do. But in a way that's what made it hard. Plus they were made to be a challenge.

- It's just some weird mindset thing people have. I am the same way. I'm pretty good at MW2, but I can't get far at all in the classic Mario. You'd think since there are so many more things to do and be aware of in MW2 that something like Mario, which only involves timing jumps and precision, basically, would be much more complex.

- Perhaps you just started playing the older games with the wrong mindset! You remembered the parts that gave you trouble, and somewhere in the back of your mind you said, 'What if I still can't beat beat those parts?' henceforth 'jynxing' yourself. Happens to me all the time.

Oh my God... I just used henceforth correctly in a sentence.

Gah. I had more ideas before I started typing. Three suggestions it is!

It seems that way, but it is not overly true. Newer games are just easier (usually). I am reminded of Rocket Knight Adventures. I used to be able to breeze through the first level and most of the 2nd. I played it recently and it kicked my ass even after multiple attempts. I had to use the game genie to get past the first level.

Older games are lot tougher because they were quarter eaters in arcades, using their difficulty to force you to put in more coins to keep going. Today, games are meant to be completed so you get the full story experience so they are a lot easier so everyone can beat them.

Most definetely. Back when I first started playing games like Dragon Age: Origins and Bioshock would have kicked my ass. Of course back then I would'nt have been allowed or able to play those games because they didn't excist yet and are far to violent for a child.

Well I get better at the controls of the games since they're all pretty similar.
But who knows, maybe if I went back to some older games I'd get my ass kicked.

It is hard to tell if games have gotten easier or if I have gotten better. But DooM is much harder than any game of this generation. So I'll go with that.
