We used to leave both our PCs on most of the time for updates, downloads etc, but as my electricity provider is my arch nemesis in life, I would rather turn them off than give those bastards an extra penny.

As for games consoles, our PS3 turns itself off, bless it.

I Turn my pc off when i go to sleep or when i go out for a long time ,when im home or nearby its always on. I dont turn it off because im worried that it might brake or something ,but electricity costs alot here and my pc is loud so its hard to fall asleep at night.

I turn off my Xbox and Wii, but put my computer in sleep mode. It's better than turning the computer off.

I leave my consoles off yeah, no reason to keep them on when not in use.
But my computer is always on, I don't enjoy suffering through slow start ups every time I use it. Sometimes I will sleep it but more often then not I just don't have any incentive to.

As I understand it, quite a lot of general damage happens to a PC when you turn it on, as the chip heats up and expands n all that, weakening soldering and shortening its life.

That said, I don't want to waste electricity, and I doubt the heating/cooling effect causes much of a difference to a well-made machine over the course of five years or so, so I'm quite happy to turn it off every night and when I'm out.

Turn off my consoles, yeah. Not my PC though, the start-up time is too long and it can much up my settings. Not worth the hassle. Luckily I have an expensive case and a self-built computer which all up has 9 fans in it, and it sits in an air conditioned room most of the time. I also clean it out every few months.

Have it on most of the time except for when I go to school. It's what's keeping the room warm so pretty much why. And I earn like 1 second not having to boot it :)

I don't have to turn my consoles off, the PS3 does it itself, the X360 will RRoD on its own if you leave it for a while, and I haven't turned on the Wii since a week after I bought it:D
The PCs/Lappys on the other hand are almost always running, the lappys only go offline when I'm moving them and the PCs go down only for upgrades, maintenance.
Electricity is cheap as dirt over here. I got 2 desktops(server, gaming rig), 2 laptops(workstation and "couch browsing box"), 2 large LCDs, 3 smaller ones and 2 old CRT TVs in the other bedrooms and my power bill hasn't gone over the basic $80ish advance:p

Firstly, I always turn my electronics off after using them; primarily to convince myself that I'm being good and saving energy/the planet.

However, the argument for leaving PCs on is very persuasive (assuming that you turn the screen off and leave the processor on standby):
Much like a car, the average computer being used by the average user is under the most (physical) strain when starting up.
Standby mode uses almost no power, and puts much less physical strain on the CPU when restarting.
Expensive things like graphics and sound cards are all but unaffected either way.
Power surges from turning on/off the mains power *used* to have the potential to damage the RAM or even the BIOS (iirc). Nowadays this is not a problem, but it still remains in some peoples' minds.
"Getting hot" should not be a factor on systems under 5 years old; if your PC's fan isn't able to keep up with the heat produced by your processor at maximum capacity then you might have problems regardless of how well you treat your computer.

IMO, The major problem is actually software. Some applications can really hemorrhage memory if you install/update them and use them without restarting. This can have a significant effect on performance (check iTunes RAM footprint after an update but before restarting - on some systems it's about 30mb bigger). Force-quitting seems unnecessarily cumbersome (and occasionally ineffective) in that regard.

Consoles and Laptops (particularly the 360 and Gamecube) aren't built to handle 24/7 operation, even if the strain is minimal. With that said, I've read forum posts claiming that leaving a 360 on 24/7 actually reduces the likelihood of a RRoD - and, of course, others that claim the opposite.

TL;DR - no conclusive evidence either way. Waste of a post. Sorry.

I turn both my laptop and my 360 off. My laptop gets really hot if left on all day even with the cooling rack underneath, and I don't reckon it's any good for it to be left like that overnight. My 360 needs tender loving care and I don't want that to get too hot either.

One time when I went home, my mum's computer had been left on overnight and basically 24/7 for a few weeks. It was so incredibly slow and just bogged down by the amount of processes it was scheduled to run that it had just started to die.

Considering my electric bill, I do my best to make sure I shut everything off when I'm done with it and will not use it within the next 10-20minutes. My computer takes less then 30 seconds to boot up, so I'm not really concerned with time on that end and as for consoles...of course I turn them off. Unless I need to hit the next checkpoint and I don't feel like repeating anything.

I leave it off when not in use.

If nothing else the device consumes less electricity and therefore lowers my bills.

I will always turn it off or just let it go into sleep mode. It saves a ton of money overall and doesn't put too much pressure on your computer.
