I'm like most people as far as this goes. Only when I get stuck and wanna cry. Not that I play often probably because I'm such a perfectionist sore loser.
Recently started to play Little Big Planet--just finally got a PS3-- and considering that if you lose your lives no matter where you are, you have to start over, this has become important. I'm on the Serpent shrines now and I haven't seen a level as tough as that since the first part of the Wedding level. Grah!
My brother and I tend to make it a team effort. He plays and I sit dutifully at the computer, searching gamefaqs and reading it out loud for him. Works well.

I sometimes use gamefaqs when I can't figure out something after 30 minutes of walking around the same boring corridors (aka the Golden Sun experience), or when there's some hidden piece of content in the game that I've heard about but for the life of me can't figure out (like in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow where you need 1 particular soul set to actually progress beyond the "end" of the game).
Well, for necessary collectives I understand the reasons why people would use it on the first go like in the metroid vania series. What really sticks out in my mind are the spoilers you get if you're on the first run of the game. I only rely on the Faq of a game if I already did a first run of the game by own merits but rather not use it at all. I remember finishing Batman: AA with a 100% completion on the first go on Hard and feeling really proud of myself.

I usually have to be at the suicidal point of being stuck on something before I look at a guide these days, although I used them more when I was little. When I use a guide, I try to look only at the exact thing I'm stuck on and figure out the rest on my own.
I also try to do side quests and find hidden shit on my own after my first runthrough/doing the story, although I will look up things if they're really obscure.
My only real exception to this has been Fallout New Vegas, where I've looked up the quest I didn't know existed which I just failed by shooting some guy in the head. This unfortunately happens quite a lot.
