Agreed with many others on here, for the flight portions yes (having gotten to fly a glider in real life a few times myself, it feels more natural for some reason), for the other segments of the game, no.

I have noticed that in most first person shooters, there is an option for inverted y-axis controls (up is down and down is up) and I always wondered who would ever use this.
So, lets see...
I have found that many older gamers (like myself) always invert. It may be because back in the day before FPS's were all the rage, we played games like X-wing and Tie-Fighter that used actual joysticks, so our muscle memory/hand eye cordination is tuned to up=down and down=up, like flight controls, when the traditional controller came out, it is just a mini-joystick, so flight controls for me and the other old foggies.

In FPS games I can't play invert. Me and my mates put Timesplitters 2 on last week and quickly had to delay the game as we all took turns to make up up and down down.

Oddly though I need them invert for flyers like Starfox 64.

I do, but only if it is the default setting because I usually don't mess about with the control settings.

I've been 'inverting' since the days of my first flight games on the Amiga. That was on an old fashioned joystick but the habit has always remained. I use it for all FPS games, 3rd person action games or just about anything with the camera controlled by the right analogue stick.

You said it right! As a side note, how old are 'older gamers' considered to be? I'm 29 and started in 1987. Where does that put me on the gaming veteran scale?

Only when flying something, I've tried using it in good ol' shooting, but it just feels awkward to me.

I use an Inverted Y-Axis only in Console FPS games after many many months playing Timesplitters 2.

PC gaming however, still uses normal Y axis movement.

I use it on flight sims like most people, but I'd rather play an action game with my teeth than inverted axis.

Only if I'm being a complete retard and trying to play a FPS on a console.
My thoughts exactly. If it's on PC, up is up and down is down. If I'm being backward by playing an FPS on a console, I may as well go all the way and defy directions as well.

I seem to recall back in the day using inverted (I think in Goldeneye, for one). But I prefer normal now, although my cousin still likes to invert. When we play FPS together we're always switching the controls back and forth.

I invert it for flying games but not shooters.
I do it for both but I think you nailed the reason right there. I think most of the "inverted" gamers are old goats like me who first experience with any sort of third dimension in a game was in flight simulators. Then we just sort of grew up into it that way.
Yep. It wasn't flight simulators but flying games for the SNES and 64 that did it for me. They usually had inverted as the base Y-Axis setting and I just grew used to it. I cannot fly in a game without an inverted axis these days. It's become almost a crutch.

I use an inverted Y axis - but I want to unlearn that! Starting my gaming with Magic Carpet was a mistake it seems.

I tried hard but always failed. Is there a more gentle way to go to the standard Y axis? I want to prepare myself for the day when games become even more dumbed down and you can't even change simple controller moves (On a similar note ESDF > WASD!).

Help me unlearn!
