I mean planned out tactics where some people will get into a little group and do what they do only to curse at someone who messes up.

This may not have happened to you exactly, but these people just get on my nerves when I play L4D. Run-n-gun always works for me, sitting in one spot always made it less fun. But when I ignore their "plan" and am attacked by a special zombie, these guys would refuse to help me, and if I was wounded on the ground, they wouldn't help me up and would continue with their mission. This is like the Leeroy (Leroy?) Jenkins syndrome. Damn, it is annoying when you have military-wannabes playing for "skill" and not for fun.

Get owned because somebody doesn't want to play as a team on L4D is not fun...planning tactics and executing them is.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Team Fortress 2 enforce tactics. Otherwise, you are surprised as your team makes no progress.

When I play Team Fortress 2, at least with a group of friends, it's pretty much impossible not to. I play a lot of strategy RPGs too.

Weird, because I ignore tactics in both of them and I still pwn.

Maybe it's just that everyone else with the 360 versions of those games are morons?..

Run and gun IS tactics if you ask me, I've played L4D matches where the others in my team sit in a corner talking about the best way of doing it, so yeah..
You might "pwn" but how often does your team win?

Well I consider tactics as covering corners waiting for one person to say "clear!"
I imagine that a waste of time and it's funnier to just Leeroy Jenkins it.

Always have a plan...

Lost references aside, I do enjoy working tactics in-game with friends, especially in games like L4D, Halo, and Counter Strike.
Its very rewarding to crush an opponent by using a well planned out attack.

Well, you can't really play Civilization IV without any plan of attack, but when I play FPS's I usually just run around and shoot.

Well my real life friends are a bunch of jackasses when it comes to gameing, and when I am in online matches, I try to get people to do what I ask, because most people just try to rush in the front door when there is a back door and a side door, one of which happens to not be guarded!

In fact, before I ever played Versus I always pwnd at a regular online game. However, when I only started, these guys with their nondeep voices got on my nerves with their nonstop insults. And when I was on the zombie side, one of the idiots used a tank to kill me when we won and laughed.

Well I play many RPG's where you need tactics (Atlus games for example) if you don't want to get killed.

Of course, but it's very basic, and I never sacrifice gameplay to do it. I won't sit in a corner ordering people. I'll be like "I'm doing this, it'd be great if 3 people come with me" as I do it, or if I'm playing with friends, we have to change strategies on the fly. I do fantasize about having like "attack plan alpha/beta/gamma/delta" and each one involves us going somewhere else at the same time, but I don't think anyone wants to bother learning that shit, so I'd just be like "okay I'll go up the tunnel with player x, while you and player y should head in from the side."

If they listen, they listen. If they don't, they don't.

In single player deathmatch, the only tactics involve yourself so I find it much more entertaining...map control is a big thing.

In a GOOD Rts/Rtt game tactics and strategy are needed (obviously).

In any given FPS, I just go lone wolf (with very little success).

Depends on the game I suppose and who I'm playing with. Games like Kessen, you pretty much need to use tactics and have the ability to think ahead otherwise you're done. As for FPS games, usually I run in, moving from cover to cover and if that doesn't work, I'll begin flanking. If I'm playing an FPS like CoD4 with a group of friends, we tend to designate squad roles and work as a unit as opposed to going off alone. So for 6 players, we'll usually have 1 shotgunner and 1 guy with an SMG as Vanguard, and they'll be equipped with flashbangs and stun grenades for quickly storming rooms. 2 or 3 guys (depending on the map) will be equipped with assault rifles, usually the M4 or the G36c and they'll act as the main group, effective in longer range encounters and they can help storm buildings. They'll usually be equipped with flash grenades and one guy might have a smoke grenade for covering the movement of the group. Finally we'll have 1 or 2 snipers (depending on the map) to cover the flanks and make sure that nobody is coming up behind the unit.

That tends to work for us, and we all work as a unit and stick to our roles, unless there's a need for another sniper or something, in which case one of the assault rifle guys will switch to a sniper class. Occasionally one of the assault rifle guys will join the vanguard if it's an urban map and there's more need to have more guys storming a room.

I prefer working as a unit. It's more fun and you get more immersed into the game. It's even better when the enemy are doing the same sort of thing, which is rare unless we're playing a private game with a whole group of us. This is why I enjoy clan games on CoD4... For the satisfaction of working as a team and fulfilling your role. It's not about who can rack up the most kills in games like that. It's about teamwork and making sure that you do your role.

coop games me and my mates use on the fly tactics like in gears we tell each other what to do flanking etc i dont go in with a battle plan

and if i die or he died we usually alter the plan slightly rather than running in and shooting at everything

its rewarding to pull off a hard bit with tactics yer but i can see why who practically plan the whole level out on a chalkboard can suck the fun out of them game but games arnt real life military situations theres always room for mistakes and your truely working as a team then its not just your mistake its the whole teams mistake

my friend was using a sniper cuz he had a vantage point i was pinned into cover by torque bows if i moved cover i usuaully got hit and blow up but a normal drone ran straight up at my cover with a shotgun and i couldnt shoot at him because of a blindspot and he blew my face off and i was expecting my mate to say be annoyed but he said shit sorry i should have shot him

/rant

hah
