I plan on marrying my gf once we're both done with college. I think her dad might learn to like me by then, and not give us grief about it. XD

Urgh, no!

I pretty much agree entirely with Doug Stanhope on this topic, a quick youtube search and you'll find the clip, probably not a good idea for me to embed it though.

I'm just cynical maybe, but I can't help but think if you love each other enough, who needs a bit of paper to keep you together? If not, 10 years down the line, why should that piece of paper keep you miserable?

We're mainly out of the societal pressure to stay attached to one person for 80 years. My way of thinking doesn't stop that, just stops the unhappiness of people who are trapped by it.

Of course, I say that, my friend got married, and now has a kid and I think it's possibly the best thing he could have done.

That's buggered my theory.

Once I'm almost done with my college and I have my doctorate, I'll be looking to settle down, but not until then because I can't deal with that kind of economic situation until I have a very well paying job.

I am married. :D

It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be,....if you continue to treat each other like adults, and don't sweat the small stuff. Like fighting about pot roast or envelopes. Or who didn't start the dishwasher. Seriously,..who does that?

I never expected him to change for me, and vice-versa. He's my best friend, and we have a pretty great time together.

Edit: Also, we didn't start out planning to get married, and we don't really wear our wedding rings. I wasn't even the one who brought it up. It was about 3 1/2 years in, when he started asking me about marriage. I was perfectly happy to just stay together, and I told him so. But he eventually asked on his own time when he was sure he was ready, I said sure, and that's that.

I'm not gonna get married. My father always said "why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?".
Cookie for the quote!

Its not about the paper, its about the memories a couple will remember on that special say when they both say "I do". The marriage ceremony (whether its religious or secular) its all about celebrating two people coming together in front of friends and family. And not about showing off to others saying "yeah I have a piece of paper to prove Im gonna stick to it till the end"

Yes some people will marry out of financial reasons(either out of necessity or just to make a bigger income) but not everyone will do that.
