I could go on an incredibly lengthy rant about this, but I'll spare you and just give you the short answer, no.

well he had bad taste to begin with... COD better than anything? no not realy. only thing it has is excelent advertising campaigns and fanboys to advertise some more. and he is a fanboy so dont bother arguing with him about anything, unless you find the idea of beating your head into a wall until your eyes pop out to be a good thing to do...

back to topic, it doesnt matter the rating of the game or what the content is about as long as its fun and chalenging without being punishing. the majority of "kiddie" games have all three factors. COD from the first always was punishing if you messed up. challenging? not really. fun? was until they cookie cut same as the last one after MW and is why I will never ever buy a COD title again.

Of course not!

I don't play a lot of "kiddie games" but when I do it's Little Big Planet.

Just because a game has blood and guts in it doesn't make it an amazing game. your friend is an idiot and is missing out on a lot of good games that are out there.
The movie Arthur (with russell brand) surprised me, it's only rated PG in australia and I didn't notice that until I had the ticket. I looked at my mate and we both thought that it could be a mistake to watch it, but it's easily one of the funniest movies I've seen this year and there wasn't swearing, shoot ups, explosions, nudity (although brand gets down to his undies a few times) so being "mature" doesn't make it better

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.

Mature is a theme. Different themes fit different games.

As others have said, games do not have to be mature to be fun, either in terms of an M-rating or in terms of dealing with honest to goodness mature themes. However, the vast majority of the games I've bought in the last year or so have been rated M. The reason? The AAA industry is focusing on the 18+ crowd. That's really it; I'm at a point in my life where the rating means absolutely nothing to me, unless I'm buying from Gamestop, in which case an M rating means I'm going to get carded despite my full beard. Kidding aside, I buy games because I want to play them. While this means I have been buying a lot of M-rated games lately, I will happily buy a game of any rating if it interests me; I think the real story here is the relative dearth of non-shovel ware E-rated games.

I weep for the children of today; when I was very young, it was pre-ESRB, and the majority of games were family friendly. After the advent of the ESRB, games were mostly K-A rated at first, and E-rated once they phased out K-A. It's only within the last decade that I've noticed the majority of worthwhile games being rated out of reach of children; first with a glut of T-rated games when I was in middle school, and then with seemingly every other game I've been interested in since high school being rated M. The game industry needs to realize that children are its future, and it's doing itself a huge disservice by focusing so heavily on games with an M-rating.

Ummm, no.

Just look at the Kirby series.
Some of the BEST platformers around, all of the games are loads of fun, and you play as a sentient pink marshmallow running around a rainbow colored dream land.

Though some of the bosses in the Kirby series are pretty out of place...

Poll: Validate my opinion, Escapist!

Seriously, nobody is going to vote "yes" unless it's to spite you.

[sub]I mean, I agree, it's just that this is kind of a no-brainer. You might as well make a poll called "ARE PUPPIES AND KITTENS ADORABLE?".[/sub]
I was thinking more along the lines of

Poll: I want a post with a lot of replies so I'm putting in a poll with an obvious answer

Mature as in serious?

I have four words for you: Cronker's. Bad. Fur. Day.

Yeah that's about as far from 'mature' as you can get. It's also amazing.

OT: No, they do not, mature games are nice, but when every game tries to be mature and edgy, it starts to get boring as hell

Of course not. I love Super Scribblenauts, not because it's mature (it isn't) but simply because you have not truly lived until you have seen a crowd of timid dishwashers fleeing in teroor from a Furious Cucumber.

Of course they don't. tits gore and cursing is not what makes a good game, they're part of some good games, but not essential to games in general.

Some games, obviously will benefit for beeing aimed at an older audience, if the game actually calls for gore tits and swearing, don't cut it just to lower the age rating, if it will leave something lacking from them game.

Generally i thikn the age rating system is no god when it comes to gagueing a games "maturity". you can make an 18+ game full of everything that'll grant it an 18+ ratng and still have it be the most immature game in ages, and on the other hand, a good deep game doesn't neccecerily need those things to be well fit for mature players, and can easily get a low age rating.
Remember that the age ratings are not meant as a guideline to which age-group will enjoy the game the most, it's meant as a sort of security for preventing raging parents from attacking the game/movie companies cause their little kid leanerd some new naughty words.

As for the OP's friend, while this will never be more than guessing from my part, i'll take a shot at it.
I'll guess your friend, like many other people his age and older (you said teenager, so i assume thats what he is) are more or less obsessed with appearing mature and grown up.
They are afraid that people will see them as childish, and over-compensates for this by beeing very open for anything that they think will make them seem like adults, and generally brushing everything away that might make others think of younger children when watching their actions.
He'll grow out of it sooner or later, and learn that just cause something is enjoyable for a child, doesn't mean it has to be unenjoyable for adults. A good example of this is animated movies, like pixar movies and such, which a lot of young people will automaticly dismiss, cause they label them as childish. Ofc some of them are aimed more at children and might not offer as much to an adult, but others will offer way more to someone 31 years of age than someone 13 year old. Still cause they're essentially cartoons, they'lll be dismissed as kiddy things by some people.
Moviebob just did a "the big picture" episode about grim comics that relates pretty well to this, but from the perspective of someone who has lived too see a bunch of years more than i have.

One word: Pokemon.

Perhaps the best selling game franchise of all time. Appeal to people of all ages. I need say no more.

And if I need more well then: Legend of Zelda, Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog (before 2000), Super Meat Boy, Castle Crashers. There's more but i'll stop now.
