I recently had some friends over for the night. One of them had brought Call of Duty: Black Ops, and was eager to start playing. However, at his time of arrival, I was in the middle of a level of Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack In Time. He immediately complained about how we should start playing Black Ops, to which I responded "Sure, as soon as I get to a good stopping point."

Of course, two minutes later, he was losing faith in my taste in games, criticizing me for enjoying such a "kiddie" game. He was going on about how kid-friendly games could never be enjoyable to self-respecting teenagers, and how the gameplay and production values are "naturally, fundamentally and ALWAYS" better in an adult-oriented game.

I tried explaining how he couldn't judge that without playing a kid-friendly game with an unbiased eye; R and C is just as fun as Blops, if not more so. He refused to change his stance.

Does a game HAVE to be more mature to be more enjoyable? Why or why not?

Banjo Kazooie is one of my favorite games ever. The rest of the group is dominated by other N64 platformers, the second Paper Mario, FFVII, Metroid Prime, Ocarina of Time, and those sorts of things. The most "mature" game I have up there is Mass Effect 2.

So no.

Um...your joking right? Yeah it's your friends opinion, but just if a game is mature, it won't make it better.

Portal 2, I loved it, and it's rated E
People still like pokemon games, they are almost all E
And there are many others.

Simply, mature does not mean better

I hope you show this post to your friend. :D lol

I don't see why it would have to be. If you enjoy it, you enjoy it.

Hell, I'm a grown man and I'm going to watch Hoodwinked Too with my not girlfriend tomorrow. (She wants to see Madea, but yeeeeah...no.)
(Yeah, I get that's a movie and not a game, but close enough.)

I still play 'kiddie' games like Mario, Pokemon, and Disgaea. Seriously, if you like the game/movie/book, then go with it and ignore what other people think.

Nope.
Those people are the kind of people who are very closed minded and dont appreciate your wide taste in games.

And ill just leave it there before I say something ime going to regret.

I'm proud of the fact that no-one's said yes.

It's early yet, but still, a good sign.

Of course it bloody doesn't, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It can make it more enjoyable, but it doesn't have to be.

Poll: Validate my opinion, Escapist!

Seriously, nobody is going to vote "yes" unless it's to spite you.

[sub]I mean, I agree, it's just that this is kind of a no-brainer. You might as well make a poll called "ARE PUPPIES AND KITTENS ADORABLE?".[/sub]

Hold up. Ratchet & Clank are kiddie games?

I guess that's not really the point. The answer is, "No, don't be ridiculous." If that were remotely true, M-rated game sales would be higher than T-rated games, but the fact is that it's the other way around(At least it was, last I checked. The statistics may have changed.)

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't his logic dictate that games like DOA: Extreme Beach Volleyball, The Guy Game, and BMX XXX are automatically better than everything else just because they contain mature content?

I like to have a feeling of immersion in a game but it does not have to be realistic to have that. I have always preferred games like halo and crysis over games like cod and battlefield. although mirrors edge was great (in my opinion) however there are too many game trying to be realistic rather than just fun. I find gran turismo extremely boring however I love Need for speed most wanted and burnout revenge on the 360.when was the last time there was a really good dragon game, I think it was in the 90's with the early spyro's. it can depend on the game and genre but most the time no. but like I said as long as you can get immersed in the plot, story and gameplay it deos not need to be realistic however common sense should be used, you would not make a game about flying cows unless you were going for complete stupid wich in my opinion is not funny. It does not have to be realistic but it should feel realistic in a way like "wow... there could really be a bunch of survivors journeying across the universe". immersion not stupidity, jokes should be clever and the plot and gameplay surprising not bland and repetitive. (my bad it ses maturity not relism, still some valid points there)
More mature games usually feel more immersive so sometimes and they have more room on how to make they're game's, they can show things in mature game's that you cant show in a G rated game (or E, i think they are the same thing E and G, g stands for general and E stands for everyone... I think) they can show loss and what it can do to a person and make it very meaningful. so sometimes but most the time No.

Everybody has that little kid in them that laughs a little bit when another person makes a fool of themselves. Is this mature? No. Does that make it any less funny? Well, no. In sort of the same way this can be applied to games. I mean come on, don't tell me that you didn't laugh in enjoyment the first time you got an infinite gravity loop in Portal. Trivial and immature humor can be some of the most entertaining that exists.

Your friend's opinion is stupid and he should feel stupid, for many reasons, including for the simple fact that he considers Black Ops more mature than a game like Rachet and Clank. If Black Ops is his idea of maturity, that just tells me he has no idea what being mature actually means. Even if he just means Mature as in the rating, that's still no excuse. More blood and gore does not make something more adult.

If anything, I personally find family friendly or all ages games way more enjoyable than ones aimed solely at that blood and gore obsessed teenage male demographic. Sure, I enjoy my Fallouts and Dead Spaces as much as the next gamer, but, looking at my list of 25 favourite games, most of them are things I played as a kid that were aimed at all ages. I'm not even going to mince words here: I consider games like Spyro 2 a million times more fun than Black Ops, at least as I experienced both of them.

If he likes Black Ops better than Rachet and Clank, fine, that's his prerogative and he has every right to like what he likes, but the fact that he wants to go around denegrating all ages games and people who play them because he thinks it makes him look grown up and manly to play games with an M rating and violence and nothing else is just dumb.

TL,DR: playing Septic Avenger.

joking aside, no. Some of the best games are outright wacky. Just Cause 2 was pretty crazy which helped me overlook the bland, cookie-cutter missions. I'm actually put off by some of the ultra serious games like Modern Warfare and I found Homefront downright vulgar.

Mostly, when people say something is "mature", they mean there's tits and swearing and stuff blowing up. Sticking that into something does not automatically make it mature.

If they mean "mature" as in it deals sensible with serious issues or something, that tends to improve things, if done right, which it usually isn't.

Well, it really depends on what your definition of mature is. I think a game that knows what it is and tries to improve on that aspect is a mature game. A game that takes one concept and takes it to the highest level of quality and playability, and doesn't care about people complaining that there's not enough story, or that there's not enough angst and blood and depression. A game that builds on itself until it gets to the best it possibly can be. Also, the game doesn't try to pound its message into your head every chance it gets if it has one. That, I think, is what truly makes a game mature. Of course, by my definition COD isn't that mature. And also by my definition, a game that everyone can enjoy is truly a mature one. But hey, that's just me.

NO! I enjoyed Portal more than halo 1-3 combined, and I get way more excited about "kiddie" games (as my 9 year old brother calls them) such as Sonic Colors, Pokemon, Mario, Donkey kong, etc, then I ever have for what some call "real" games (Halo, Killzone, Crysis, COD, etc.) a game is enjoyable because its FUN, something a lot of game companies have forgotten.

I only have 3 M-Rated games in my top 10: Vandal Hearts 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Shining Force 2. The rest are E's and T's. So no, I do not share your opinion.
