You simply cannot get more 'hardcore' than that game! It is the most brutal masterpiece I have ever played!

Although I should point out that he has a gun.

Dragon Age didn't feature any guns and a lot of people still cry about not being to beat it on Normal (or Easy for that matter)...
I guess sometimes non-gun-induced violence can make up for the absence of guns in games, as long as there is enough of it. Hence the blood spatters on characters after battle make up for the absence of guns, making it hardcore once more. Bioware knew what it was doing.

That, and sex scenes. Even if they are as bad as in Dragon Age. *shudder*
I turned off the blood spatter in DA:O, it didn't add to the game and it's still as badarse as before. Also, there's 2-3 sex scenes in the game and they only last a few seconds, I don't see the big deal. That's not what makes DA:O "hardcore"...

Also, I belive this thread is MASSIVELY confusing "hardcore" in the context of difficulty and "hardcore" in the context of content...
Hardcore is always confused that way. I would consider quite a few good turn-based strategy games hardcore. They have a steep-learning curve and are extremely demanding of the player. But they would make many modern "Hardcore Gamers" wail in confusion.

On a side note: Badarse
God, I don't think I've ever heard a word that amazingly british.

Halo isn't a hardcore game, call of duty isn't a hardcore game and gears isn't a hardcore game.

The only really, truly hardcore game out there is hello kitty island adventure.

Also Counter strike.

Considering what IWBTG is... Kid's gun is a peashooter, isn't it? And if it's a peashooter instead of assault rifle, does it matter?

I'm going to go out on a limb and postulate that the difference between casual and 'hardcore' games is that the hardcore games aren't casual games.

Seriously though, the difference has nothing to do with guns per se, it's down to elements like realism, immersion, universe creation, narrative structure, and difficulty: Casual games very rarely aspire for realism, keep people playing because they're bloody addictive rather than outlets for escapism, rarely have much if any real 'setting' beyond simple window dressing for the underlying game mechanics, rarely have stories, and tend to be on the easy side of the difficulty scale.

Now taken on their own, any one element on that list isn't enough to brand something a casual title - quite a few games the broad consensus would consider 'hardcore' don't have much of a story, realism isn't something hardcore titles necessarily have in spades either, etc. But it's not one key difference that makes the distinction, it's a combination of most of those that get something labeled as a casual game.

And that which is not casual is therefore a 'hardcore' title by virtue of falling on one side of the "casual vs hardcore" gamer divide.

Yeah, I got a habit using it since many forums on which I posted filtered the word "ass" by default, but "arse" was often unaffected. Granted, Escapist doesn't use any language filters, but the habit has stuck.

And yes, "arse" is a superior word to "ass". ;)

Not really... I suppose it's fairly meaningless since you can't actually see it.

No. If you're going to start in 1337 you damn well better finish in 1337.

To elaborate: modern definition of "hardcore" is utterly wrong. It's supposed to mean "insane difficulty", but somehow it came to mean "grit and machismo" instead. I suppose we can thank the mainstream FPS players, insecure 15-to-25-year-old men, for that.
Exactly the example I was gonna use. Whether a game is 'hardcore' or not depends on how difficult it is and how much time you have to put in it.
Another game that I would consider to be hardcore is Ninja Gaiden. That was bloody hard.
Although I would say that CS could be termed as quite a hardcore FPS game.

By definition, a "hardcore" gamer is a gamer that plays for the immersiveness, and really expects a good experience out of their games. Wether you play Modern Warefare, World of Warcraft, or even Super Mario Brothers.

Casual gamers are people who pick up a game simply to kill an hour or two before something more important comes along. Hardcore gamers play games as their main source of entertainment.
that may be the difference between casual and hardcore gamers, but not games.
the hardcore gamer plays plants vs zombies for 6 hours a day, the casual for 10 minutes. the question is: is plants vs zombies a hardcore game?

my answer is: who gives a flying monkeys if it is or not. casual game vs hardcore game is a debate as stupid as is xbox or ps3 better.

stick to what you like, dont rag on what other people prefer.

No. RTS are more suited to hardcore gaming than FPS.

There's more to learn when you try to master a quality RTS and knowing a great deal about a particular game is very hardcore.

Yeah those twelve -year-old Xbox owners who think they are "TEH HARDCOREZ!!!!!!11111!!!!!" because they play Gears of War which has lots of homoerotic macho-ness and blood are funny even though Gears is about as casual as a TPS gets.

Much as I detest the Casual/Hardcore elitist thing, I must say,

I consider Halo to fit pretty well into the Casual demographic.

To add more is hardcore.

And it's in no way an FPS.
MY MIND - WHY YOU DO THIS?????

How can you possibly play that without becoming hypnotised or seizing?

EDIT: From the youtube comments - "What if Japan used that final boss in a war against the US?"
"We'd be fucked!" "Forever their slaves!"
