I myself, enjoy playing chick characters most of the time, if I have a choice, a la option one up there on the poll. I ask because I have two friends I usually game with who differ greatly in opinion on the matter. One of my friends gives adamant protest if forced to play a female, sometimes to the point of outright refusal to play, which I find silly. My other friend doesn't care, and goes by stats. If stats aren't an issue, he says, it doesn't really matter then. We figured here would be as good a place as any to settle our argument about what the majority of gamers think about the (non)issue.

So, what about you folks? Any issues playing a girl?

EDIT: Added responses for ladies.

I generally prefer to play as a female character. Gaming treats men and women differently in regards to characterisation and abilities. While the generic Space Marine, heavy armour and weaponry archetype (something I find boring) is considered not simply an acceptable characterisation for male characters, but in fact a AAA title quality characterisation, developers are forced to develop female characters in new and more interesting ways. And, while I don't say no to having an attractive female avatar, it certainly is not a deciding factor in why I like playing female characters.

It doesn't help that all the Male models In games like WOW are ugly as fuck. So yer, I play female most of the time tbh.

Only if i get to pick. If the main character is my "avatar" in the game, as opposed to... well, established character, then of course i'd like it to resemble me somewhat. Duh. But with "established" female characters in more linear games i have no problem, and in fact would like to see more of them.

Nope. Gender doesn't matter in the slightest. It all depends if the game is good.
Not much else I can say, really. In a game, I control a walking death-machine. Gender means nothing.

Especially in games like Metroid. Heck, I didn't even KNOW Samus was a chick.

I dont really care either way. Although, in games like wow, I prefer to play as females for the alliance side due to alliance males looking like firetrucks... unless its a warrior or deathknight... while for the horde... well, thier proportions dont bother me as much.

Either way, it does not really matter.

Nope. Should it bother me? As long as the character is likeable, then I have no problem with playing as one.

Erm, no?
Since I am a woman it doesn't bother me a bit, but then neither does playing as a guy, because if it did there would be an awful lot more games I never got to play.
The percentage of female to male protagonists is ridiculous, take a chill pill guys and imagine what it might be like if the situation were reversed!
EDIT - Might have been nice to have had an option in your poll that recognises women exist, there was non suitable for me to vote!

Only if my character has to interact with male characters in a romantic fashion a la Mass Effect 1 & 2. It's just weird to have characters that I would consider buddies to suddenly start looking at me in a sexual way.

Depends. If it's a game with a female character, no. If it's a game where I can choose to be male or female, yes.

Quite the opposite. I usually go out of my way to play a female character, for one reason or another. I haven't totally established non-aesthetic reasons why.

I don't mind, but I could be biased.
I think this may be slightly aimed at guys.

I don't really mind, doesn't really matter to me.
Then the OP should have made that clear in the title, but then you know we female gamers want special treatment all time what with making so many threads that exclude men and cry for attention ;-)

If it is an RPG where you can set yout stats to how you like, doesn't matter. I usually have a heavy melee dude at first, then a lady next that is usually something other than big dumb brute.
