I don't mind, but I could be biased.
I think this may be slightly aimed at guys.

I don't really mind, doesn't really matter to me.
Only slightly. Very slightly. Like, negligibly.

First of all, I'd say there is a difference between playing a pre-determined female character and MAKING a female character.

Playing a female doesn't bother me in the slightest, especially if the character was pre-determined as the game's protagonist, such as Jade in Beyond Good And Evil. In such situations I am merely taking control of an existing (virtual) person and that person's physical characteristics are not my choice.

However, I am more reluctant in CREATING an avatar of the opposite gender. I never play females in MMOs and in RPGs I always play male, except mybe one female to check out the differences in gameplay. When given the chance to actually make a character, I tend to try and represent myself.

But overall, if you throw me behind the controlls of a girl, I generally won't have any problem with it.

Incidentally, I never quite got with the whole "If I'm staring at an ass the whole time, it might as well be a female ass" thing. Not that I mind a bit of virtual booty, but I'm rarely looking at my character's ass. I guess I'm just too busy playing the game... :p

Since I am a woman it doesn't bother me a bit, but then neither does playing as a guy, because if it did there would be an awful lot more games I never got to play.
The percentage of female to male protagonists is ridiculous, take a chill pill guys and imagine what it might be like if the situation were reversed!
EDIT - Might have been nice to have had an option in your poll that recognises women exist, there was non suitable for me to vote!
Just switch the genders in my question, I suppose. I didn't really single women out for this as the ones I know that game tend to be more open to playing any character, regardless of sex.

I want to pick the 'Not at all' option. But the rest of the statement really doesn't apply to me. Seriously OP, try to make it seem like you don't assume that everyone is male and heterosexual.

More OT: Very occasionally in RPGs it can feel a little odd playing as a female character for me. Not quite sure why.

EDIT: Thanks for the poll change.

I play male characters occasionally. In tabetop games, sometimes, male characters suit the character personality more than a female would. I usually play female characters in MMO's, but every now and again, I'll switch to a male so that I don't have to wear revealing outfits. I like how full plate armor looks more, and girls don't always have that option. What with the form fitting and the revealing nature of some of the outfits.

Normally, no. It doesn't bother me. When the option arises I will try to make a second playthrough as a female character.

However, Mass Effect 1 + 2 seem to be the only games I can't stand playing a female character. I'm unsure why.

I actually like playing as a female character on console games. Playing as Yuna, Riku, and Payne in FFX-2 was amazing, and playing as Lilith in Borderlands just kicked so much ass, it wasn't even funny.

I don't like playing as a female on MMORPG's though. Not because every 12 year old sees you and automatically starts flirting with you (by that I mean asking to be his "gf" or if you could send him some titty pics; 12 year olds can't flirt)... It's just most usually put the female character in a healer/buffer role, whereas I rather be the tank, or damage dealer. Just depends on the game for me really, but I have no problem with it.

Thanks for putting a 'girl', option but I'm a woman *tuts, why can't they get anything right?* ;-) lol, joking, don't hurt me.....

Nah, man.

It just makes sense with RPGs and stuff, anyway. I mean, what are you looking at for 99% of an RPG (or at least, what's always right in front of your face)? Isn't it more logical to go with an opposite-gender character so you at least have something that's kinda interesting to ogle?

As for whether or not I mind playing a female character (not just a skin in a game that lets you create your own character), I don't mind that either. But the female should be her own person if she's the main character, not just a collection of spandex and cleavage that walks like a person.

Jade from Beyond Good and Evil was a great female character. Ivy... Is not. I would feel somewhat unclean playing an Ivy sort of female all the time in a game, especially if it was online. Show some class, woman!

If it fits the story (Dark Messiah wouldn't work if Sareth was a girl), or if the experience of the rpg changes (DA:O changes a couple of situation depending on your gender), than I don't mind what gender my character has.
I mind in some cases though, where a female option really wouldn't have hurt.

I only mind if my friends/parents see me playing as one. The last thing I need is to be sent to a shrink because of a misunderstanding.

Been there, man. And I know thy pain.

Word of advice? Stay away from FFX-2. My dad still looks at me funny sometimes.

I'm male, but I actually prefer to play games as a female, and do so if I ever have the opportunity. I don't know why, its not really a sexual thing, I just like girls more than guys. The thought of a girl operating a gun and kicking ass is just cool.

I too especially admire the view...;)
Plus when you get done with that part, there's always an actual character underneath..unless whoever built the title was too dumb to realize such a thing was necessary.

That said...I think I could actually prefer games with Female PCs/protagonists..

Which makes me wonder why if Bungie insists on making everyone continue to play Halo games revolving almost entirely around Spartans and the UNSC(Covenant/forerunner game now, please), that they don't at least give us a more well known/interesting Spartan to kick ass with...say...Linda. Who I'd personally pick over John-117 about any day of the week.

Sorry..kindof hijacked the topic for a sec..As you were.

I only care when my playing with my dad in the room. -A rare occurrence in years of late, but it still happens- He always, loudly, spouts out something along the lines of "Why the hell do you always end up playing as the chick?"
Funny thing is that the last time he said this I was playing Metal Gear Solid 2...

I play as a female (as that is what I am) but I don't often enjoy it.
Nearly every female avatar I have played to date shows every single curve they have.

Is it so hard to have a neutral-gender/modest looking female avatar?
I just want to play the game, as a female, without being called 'babe' all of the time.

It doesn't help that all the Male models In games like WOW are ugly as fuck. So yer, I play female most of the time tbh.
I resent that!
You'll never get a piece of this smoking hot undead ass anyway.

Generally though, I don't care at all.
