I'd like to think that I don't, but I'd assume that subconsciously it does have an effect on me. Which is a seriously messed up method of marketing if you ask me.

Well to be fair that whole game was basically a fanfiction writer's wet dream.

Yep, I would say it influences me.

It influences me to not buy it. I find it insulting, as it implies I'm stupid or desperate enough to buy anything if there's tits all over it.
This. I hate "sex sells" and everything that comes with it. One of the reasons I didn't get Bayonetta was the sex appeal was so over the top it was just gross. Even with the stuff I really like, I don't like fanservice. Makoto from Blazblue for instance, I love her character and playstyle, but she's wearing half a sports top and a thong with some napkins clipped to it and I feel dirty playing her. But the thing I hate most about "sex sells" is that it keeps on working. People, you're better than this, stop buying everything with T&A on the cover!

Yeah, sometimes it does. I'm only human, I'm not going to pretend I'm Mr Perfect. It doesn't play a large role and I've certainly never bought a game based solely on that though.

If a game has nothing better to sell itself on than the fact that there are babes in it then its probably not a good game. In my opinion sex appeal is a bonus to a good game. "This game's story is awesome. And the gameplay's awesome too! And look! TITS! :D"

I rarely buy games anyway, so I don't have any experience on the matter. The games I've bought in the last year have been quite light on or completely devoid of sex appeal. But every time I walk by my local GameStop and see the cardboard ad for Tomb Raider I can't help but wonder why Lara's dressed only in her tank top and tight pants despite standing in the rain on a windy cliff. Get a coat, a jacket, a wolf pelt, something, woman! You're gonna get a cold!

But then the ad wouldn't be able show Lara's rather attractive figure and bottom in tight pants.

I guess that if I was on the fence about buying a game, but then got the feeling that it tried to lure me in with sex appeal, I wouldn't buy it. So in short, yes, it does affect my purchase decisions.

Nah. If they resort to sex appeal they always just splash tits across the front cover. Not very effective if you're more of an ass/legs guy...

+ there's the fact that if they do have to resort to sex appeal, it's probably a bad game.

Thinking about it, I buy all my games off Steam now anyway, where there aren't any front covers. I can't remember any games on there actually attempting to use sex appeal at all.

Yes, but not in the expected way. Oversexualization in a game can make me LESS likely to buy it. If I see devs trying to pass off chainmail bikinis as eyecandy I tend to assume they are hiding how bad their game is...

Mostlikely.

Marketing where the subject realizes that he/she is being manipulated isn't very effective. As such, most people here have been influenced by sex appeal, only it has been done in a way thats subtle enough so they haven't realized it and gotten offended.

Then again, the way the OP was written people only seem to be examining the extremes and not the much more common, subtle touches that are prevalent in almost all entertainment. From my experience, the people who conciously think "Wow, that chick is hot, maybe I should buy that product." are a very small minority. Most of the time people who are affected by sex appeal explain their attraction to the character in another way. (Good writing, relatable, otherwise interesting etc.)

It's ok guys. We're all affected by marketing, and since sex is one of the most abused and profitable aspects of marketing its a fair to assume most of are affected by it. It doesn't make you sexist or a bad person, humans are sexual creatures after all.

Overly sexualized female characters influences me in the sense that it makes me less likely to buy a game.

That sort of fanservice to get people to buy the game says to me that thats the only selling point they have, so the game itself probably isnt that great. Plus it's vaguely offensive and insulting.

I think there was only a single instance where it did appeal to me purchasing a game. Back in my teen days Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball came out and I bought it because hey teens are horny...yet I was so ashamed of my purchase that I flipped the cover to just be the blank side and I never played the game even once.

You might want to write a little more there. This is perfect example of a low content post and that can land you a warning.

OT: No I wouldn't say it affect my purchase at all.

I buy most of my games online or through digital distribution so I often wont see a boxart at all. Now I have bought games because I liked the boxart, but usually those boxarts aren't the ones with giant tits filling it.

Not really. If I'm interested in the game I'm interested, if I'm not I'm not.

Not so much sex appeal.

I'd call it nerd appeal since the game just has to feature some thing (like a sportscar in racing games) that I'm interested in.

Well knowing that Claudia Black voiced a character in Uncharted 2 cemented my decision to buy it. I don't know if that was because of Sex appeal, or just that I really like her as an actress.

Voted No. Can't recall every being swayed into buying a game just because of graphical representation. But that's just me.

In a positive manner? As in will it make me want to buy the game? No.

Then again "sex appeal" is generally not aimed at hobbyists - who will usually buy a product based on its statistical merits - but is aimed at "novice" purchasers.

The highest quality golf clubs are not sold with sex appeal, the highest quality games are not sold with sex appeal, the highest quality beer is not sold with sex appeal.

If a product tries to use sex appeal in order to sell itself then I use that as proof the product can not stand very well on its own merits.
