I don't mean work in the functional sense, I'm referring to what the Xbox's achievement system did for Xbox games: does it really motivate YOU to keep on playing games, replay game son higher difficulties, complete certain tasks and all that stuff to get trophies and whatnot to "increase your level" in the same way that the 360 does?

Personally I think the whole "level" system is stupid: if they were going to rip off Microsoft, they may as well have done it properly and actually put the points system in, I prefer it far more.

But what do you all think about the whole trophy/level malarkey? Is it better or worse than the 360's achievement points? Does it "work" for you? What do you think could be better?

Let me know.

P.S. Please, no achievement hate/trolling. I'm not inviting your opinion on why you HATE achievements.

Don't own a PS3, so I have no opinion. And I am bland. Blargh.

Works about the same for me, but then again the 360s achievements never really had that effect on me in the first place. I'm lazy when it comes to doing more than completing a game.

I prefer achievements over the trophies, they just feel more legit and at least somewhat matter. Because i can share them with my buddy easier and brag that I got 6 thousand more points than he does... Suck it Dean.

Yes I admit it, I like achievements

Why post then? Just increasing your post count?

Niether system has had much effect in motivating me to be honest, so it's a tie for me.

They're alright, I suppose, but something about them just doesn't feel as good as achievements do on the 360.

Eh, more or less.

I remember the Uncharted, Resistance and Rathcet and Clank achievments and skill points kept me coming back, mainly because I actually got something when I unlocked them.

Super big head FTW!!

From what I have played it has been so poorly implemented, I mean most of them are straight ports from the 360's achievement list and even mention aspects only available in the 360 version.

It is just a different ethos to gaming that I would never have bought into PS3 over 360 if I had known it would turn out this way, I mean the idea of having a trophy cabinet in your virtual Home space... it just makes you look like a total dickhead.

Achievements seem far more personal, which is kinda fitting with their name "what you managed to do is for YOU!" for achievements whereas PS3's trophy's seem to be entirely about "loo-o-ok at mah trophies!". Even then unless you use Home (and I WON'T) it is unnecessarily hard to access your trophy list. Trophy's just seem so patronising:
"You have earned a trophy!" yay, the game rewards me with something effectively worthless
vs
"Achievement Unlocked" seems more like a fact, a milestone, pride in oneself rather than approval from Sony's Trophy Distribution Unit.

Even the concept of Trophies annoys me, they release them way into the console cycle and they clearly want to be like Achievements but don't want to be too similar... even though PC games have been "borrowing" the concept of achievements (Valve especially) with great success an without any criticism of being unoriginal.

And when you actually win a trophy, I know it's a little thing but the presentation is pretty naff. But that's just my opinion. The "ding" and tucked away in the corner info box with an obscure and hardly iconic trophy symbol.

Just expressing my opinion, seeing as there is no option on the poll. But if I need to say something, I will say that I don't care. Both are little gimmicks that make you feel good when you accomplish something.

...What? Achievements motivate? No achievements motivate me to do something unless it is ACTUALLY fun, in which case I'd probably do it even if it wasn't an achievement. They are meaningless, and don't motivate me for shit. For example killing every pigeon in the game is not that fun, but trying to kill so many people without dying is. Its also good if the Achievements actually mean something instead of just being something that stuck up pricks can wave in my face in an attempt to call themselves better than me. I still kill them the same as any other guy. Satisfying when they either Rage Quit or actually start CRYING OVER THE HEADSET. ^^ Happened before. Of course this doesn't work when the player IS actually good. Then it's me dying. XD

there really isn't a difference, it's just a number compared to a trophy. the only real thing different is you have a bigger number of points compared to more trophies

really there isn't a difference between the two systems, they are the same but implemented a bit different and frankly i prefer the Sony version because it's just not some arbitrary number that represents your score

PS Trophies don't motivate me and neither did the Xbox Achievements. I don't see any point in them what so ever, if I wanted to complete a game, or do something in a game, then it'll be because I want to, and not so I get points for it. Besides, they have no use as far as I'm aware.. I'd probably do some if it meant a discount on the PSN or something..

I don't focus on achievements or trophies at all. I only get them by accident really. I don't try to get them.
All I can see that are better about the 360s achievements is the ability to bress the centre button to see what you got it for where as on PS3 you just get taken to the XMB but that's just a minor problem.

Its the exact same mechanism and for multi plat games generaly the exact same requirments what is their to judge, boot game, do something, box pops up congrats. Does the X-box equivlent give blowjobs or something?

And dont care for either not bashing trophies or acheivments but I would rarley go out of my way for what amounts to an e-peen number.

It's just sort of there really. I play games to have fun, not unlock trophies or achievements, so it doesn't particularly affect me.

Where's the option for "They're both irrelevant since they don't have any tangible effect on my games?". No I don't care since they don't DO anything for me. I play games for fun or a story not some arbitrary numbers.

Insomniac is pretty good in implementing skillpoints in a way that requeers actual SKILL to unlock them. Plus the fact that you don't get a skillpoint just for finishing a level.
