The new games you listed have aim-down-site mechanics (except for Tribes Ascend), so it's a rather insignificant detail when most of the time the guns are used they will actually fill up a good 60%-70% of screen space. The old games you listed don't have that mechanic because they have the floating reticle. I kind of think the opposite should be happening though; floating reticle games should have the weapons taking up more space, and the ADS games should have games taking up less space.

I actually like the trend; I really like to look at the weapons my character is holding. Sometimes I even get distracted in Homefront with the SCAR-L, because the shoulder strap would sway when I moved.

I remember reading a review of Half Life: Blue Shift, and one of the big complaints back then was how the assault rifle took up too much screen.

Funny how times change.

It doesn't annoy for the most part. Here's why: Most of those Modern FPS' have mediocre aesthetic design anyway (notice "aesthetic", not graphic). The only time I DON'T want something blocking half the screen is when I'm in a new, Incredible environment and I want to have a look around, take in the sights. In combat, I concentrate on the 3 inches around my cross-hairs. That's it. My gun could block 70% of the screen for all I care.

Like in New Vegas, when I went to Red Rock Canyon at sunset; I just put away my gun, (manually) turned off my crosshairs and just.... soaked in the sights. It was awesome.

And in that moment, it honestly wouldn't matter how MUCH of the screen my gun obscured. I wouldn't want ANY gun. I want a full 1600x900 pixels to take in the awesomeness. In HL2, I had to switch to the Crowbar when there were big sequences that I had to watch (since it had the smallest screen profile) and even THAT bothered me.

What I'm saying is: If a game desires to have grand aesthetic design as one of it's key features.....it should just have a "Hide Weapons" button, really. Doesn't matter how big the guns are. Just let me hide them when I want to. In some games this matters more than in others.

Edit: Also, You ninja'd a thread idea from me.....in REAL LIFE....Surreal 0_0

Hey, in Unreal Tournament and Quake, you can tell the game how large or small your want your weapon model to be, what angle you want it to be at, what hand you want to be holding it, if you want it in the center of the screen, or if you don't want it shown at all.

Most professional and competitive players tend to keep the weapon hidden so they can see more of the screen, and play with a higher FoV, brightskins or forcemodel, picmip, whatever, and the game might look and feel completely different.

My point is that in well-designed games, that's editable or mod-able. In games where it isn't, most of the time it doesn't impact gameplay very much, or I guess you'll just have to deal with it. Sorry.

Edit: I forgot to leave you the biggest gun on screen I've ever seen, and I think it was by design, and I know it's an exception, but it's in an old-school fps...

FPS's kinda happen to be the video game flavour at the moment. nearly every new game coming out in recent months has been shooter related or had guns in it.

Now i enjoy playing shooters and all, but it's not the only gameing genre in the world despite the fact that a lot of companies seem to see it that way at the moment.

I recon it's all about the money. What i find most annoying about the games industry is that producers (who basically have all the power over a game) have descided that shooters bring in the most money, thanks to COD, and so only shooters must be made as this will make them all rich.

I find this quite abusive and horrible tbh. Games are not a tool to make money, which are sold to jobless young to middle aged men who live in their parents basement, despite a lot of people obviously still thinking that. We need to let the world know that games are a form of art and not a money making sceme, and that they can appeal to all ages, genders, races and lifestyles.

Now lets look at some of the newer FPS titles.

Notice a changing trend of how the gun seems to take up about a quarter of the screen these days? I dunno about you guys, but I find it incredibly annoying. One reason why I dislike TPS games is that a whole character is blocking my view, but now FPS games are just swapping that with a gun sticking up my nose.

So, whaddya think?
THIS is what bothers you most about new FPS's? Lol that's pretty picky IMO. I would have been more inclined to point out how the first two of the new age ones almost look the same and how the third looks like Halo. (Seriously, compare the model of that gun to the Assault Rifle in Halo. You can tell they used it as a base) Although in complete honesty you could have shown me the first two pictures without telling me the titles (from the old FPS) and I wouldn't know if they were different.

My biggest problem is that almost all the FPSs now days look and play almost completely the same with the exception of the Metroid Prime Saga and arguably Halo. It's been well over 3 years and the entire industry is STILL clinging to the modern Warfare "Realistic" ... thing. We could use with a little diversity I think about now.

Two words: aspect ratio. Whereas traditionally, through the medium of TV, we've come from a 4:3 aspect ratio, the last 5 years we've seen a clear transition to the 16:9 aspect ratio used in cinema (all TVs today are widescreens). As a result screen real estate has become more flat, making the gun fill the screen more.

In the example of your own screenshots, you can clearly see that the new screens are much more in a landscape aspect ratio.

Im sure it does nothing to effect the quality of the gameplay, if a game is going to be entertaining to play, it will be. Regardless of what size the HUD and the gun is...

I honestly don't care. I rarely even notice the gun models being larger than they used to, and when I do it doesn't bother me. Of all the differences between old and new FPS, this one is the most trivial (to me anyway).

This is the first time I've actually noticed this, so...no, it doesn't bother me. For big guns (like assault rifles), it makes sense, but I guess I understand if you get aggravated if a pistol takes up a quarter of the screen.

And since when is HL2 an old school shooter? How long ago did it come out? 2007, yes?

It's never really bothered me, but I see it now. I really do miss FPS's that had a focus on where and why you are shooting . . . so the gun in the way adds to that.

Some stuff irks me, some stuff is really good. It depends on the game and how it implements the mechanics. Do I think regenerating health is a bad thing? Not particularly. It just depends on how it's done.

If the new trend is Brink,Bulletstorm and the near Duke Nukem I'm actually coming back to FPS.

If those are just exceptions and the future it's still Halo and call of duty no thanks. If the gun is awesome the size doesn't bothers me. BFGs were always cool.

I haven't noticed it until now and it won't annoy me because A. I'll forget about it in about 20 minutes and B. once I forget about it I wont notice it again and thus will not be annoyed by it.

to be honest we play on much larger screens these days as a rule, so ive never seen it as an issue. also, when your shooting something you pay attention to what? 3 inches or so of screen maybe? so no i dont mind that the developers want us to be able to see the lovely models they make these days

I like it, TO AN EXTENT, as it seems more immersive.
Also, full body awareness needs to happen (yay BF3).

Not only have I not noticed, but I don't even have most of these games in particular. I certainly don't care in Fallout.
