The new games you listed have aim-down-site mechanics (except for Tribes Ascend), so it's a rather insignificant detail when most of the time the guns are used they will actually fill up a good 60%-70% of screen space. The old games you listed don't have that mechanic because they have the floating reticle. I kind of think the opposite should be happening though; floating reticle games should have the weapons taking up more space, and the ADS games should have games taking up less space.
I actually like the trend; I really like to look at the weapons my character is holding. Sometimes I even get distracted in Homefront with the SCAR-L, because the shoulder strap would sway when I moved.
