(Please check your inner fanboy at the door)

As a former PS3 owner and a Xbox 360 owner (since launch) Ive constantly heard that the majority of players on Xbox live are simply assholes who would rather yell racist and discriminating remarks then look at you.

I figured that "came with the territory and curse of anonymity".

The curse Im referring to put it simply is that with a gamertag your virtually anonymous and can be anything you want to be, For alot of people you get to take out your stress on the mass's and in short be a asshole.

But I think I've stumbled onto something. Why would Xbox live hold that exclusive-ness? Since when does the Curse of Anonymity care what you play on?

Look at any place that has anonymity on the internet, and how many people act out of character.

What is it about Xbox live that supposedly attracts more assholes then not?

In my opinion, nothing more then the rest.

After watching some reviews of comparisons between PSN and Xbox live I realized that its simply easier to communicate with people on XBL then PSN, Wii or PC games.
And more often then not games (MW2 being a good example) put you in situations where your either unable to avoid communicating with strangers or its simply not a option.

Which leads to the inevitable shit tossing competitions and reputation that XBL is mis-known for.

So in conclusion I think that with Anonymity and gamertags, people will be assholes, no matter what game they play or what system they play on. Its just easier to see it on XBL since its online service makes it easier and unfortunately harder to avoid communicating.

Anybody else think this?

Xbox 360, PS3 or PC. A-Holes are everywhere (and yes I have all three) but it does seem, in my opinion, that the 360 has attracted the majority of them. I wish people would learn a bit of respect for other people when they buy a microphone as A-Holes have ruined Halo 3 multiplayer, COD MW games and Counterstrike for me.

XBL has more people, therefore it has more assholes.
Also MW2 forbidding party chat has increased the problems, the idea of it to invoke "teamwork via voice chat" backfired really, really badly.

See also penny-arcade's theory below (applies everywhere):

Theres idiots and Assholes everywhere you go, but yes, xbox live has a lot of them, get a nuke or a AC130 in MW2 and listen to how bad you get bitched out.

Good points, and nice comic reminds me of a CAD one.

Now I may be wrong, but isn't the average PS3 gamer a tad older? Could that have something to do with it?

I don't about PS3s, but 360s get shipped with a headset... assholes could simply be more louder, which has the illusion of them being everywhere.

Very few games come with a USB headset for the PS3 (MGS4) is the only one I can think of.
Every 360 comes with a wired headset and most subscriptions to XBL come with one as well. So communication is strongly encouraged and is very easy to access.

Somewhat. Also, the PS3 doesn't come with a headset, which makes it slightly harder to get right online and insult people.

And they have a smaller market share at the moment. Less consoles means less people. Less people means less assholes overall.

I too like the OP had a PS3 and now have a 360, and I cannot say how different the two are online. On PS3 I barely heard a swear, and even the ones I did were in good nature. Then you get Xbox Live and the racism, homosexual jokes and god knows what else.

I think the fact that PS3 headsets come separately has something to do with it. Getting online for 360 owners is as easy as plug and play, meaning you're average assclown and 8 year old can get on and do/say whatever they want without effort.

At least with the PS3 you need to go spend your hard-earned money on a bluetooth headset, and then intentionally sync it up with the console. As that process takes a relative amount of intelligence, your average assclowns and 8 year olds are less likely to make the effort.

Granted, these are generalizations, but c'mon, the 360 makes it much, much easier for larger amounts of people to get online, hence more morons.

EDIT: Dammit, ninja'd by a few posts. At least I'm not the only one to notice.

I just can't believe how many parents let thier kids play MW2 online. Every lobby is full of kids who can't be more than 10 or 11.

It does annoy me how most people can not put together a more constructed sentence than " *** **** you *** you stole my kill ***" or singing a random song into the headset.
I wish that Xbox hadn't attracted so many, but i do think unfortunatly it has its good share.
I usually only have party chat on, or I end up muting nearly everybody in the game.

In my experience there are more douchebags on X-box live than there are on the PSN. But that might just be because of the fact that not very many people on PSN have headsets and therefor cannot express their douchebagness.

Well, the main reason would be that Xbox 360s generally have headsets come with them, meaning douchebags don't have to go out and specifically buy a headset. Few of the Xbox LIVE trolls 'n' A-holes would care about getting a microphone and talking, but since they have one they might as well use it.

Yeah, it's pretty simple....

XBL has a larger online community, and most of them are equipped with headsets that came either free or as a package with points or a game or something. XBL encourages more communication, and unfortunately that means more dickwads as well.

If PS3's all came with headsets you'd have the same problem, probably worse considering that their online is free....

Why is the escapist full of Valve and PC elitests? Why is SRK full of fighting game elitests? Shooting games are the most popular to younger kids the xbox has the best shooters, young kids are dicks so do the math.
